Alternate stocks for Savage 10PC?

I'm wondering what's out there for upgraded target style stocks, or simply a more tactical/functional stock for target shooting for a new savage 10PC. Short action, round receiver. 223
I see lots of savage stocks but there are so many options and specifics I get lost. Is the 308 action and barrel the same size as the 223? ( on the outside obviously)
 
What do you want to spend? You can get an XLR chassis from north shore barrels (around $800-1000 I believe) or you can get a Choate stock (around $250-300). The manufacturer will be able to tell you what will fit your particular action, it should be on their websites. Sorry I couldn't provide more options I just can't remember the others off the top of my head.
 
The 308 and the 223 Savage PC10 actions are the same exterior size, I have both. The XLR is a wickedly good stock for a more solid (precise) chassis and as well it looks good. Your budget will be the main thing as price will go from low hundreds to 4 digit easily. My factory stocked 10PC in 308 shot a hand loaded 3rd group that was .130moa@101yards. The factory stock will work just fine. Just remember you have the 4.41 SA with the bottom bolt release;)

I dont necessarily have any big complaints about the factory stock other than the camo... not a fan of any kind of camo. But I see such wildly different shapes on true "long range" guns and figure, they must be designed that way for a reason... those butt stock shapes must be a benefit in some way. That was my thinking anyway. I see I can get different ones for this gun at Mystic for the $200-300 range. Id also like to pick up an M-Pod and upgrade the barrel at some point and add a muzzle brake. So I just need to prioritize... I think the stock is farther down the list than the pod and the barrel.
 
A great deal of the fancy bits you see on highend competition rifle stocks has to do with getting the rifle to fit the shooter well in the position that he fires the rifle in competition. For example in prone shooting where you use a shooting jacket and sling, it is helpful (but not essential!) to have a stock that has an adjustable cheekpiece, and adjustable butt plate, a grip that allows a relatively more vertical orientation of the shooting hand, a relatively wide forend with a rail installed (to hold a handstop), etc.

For shooting off a bipod with a rear bag, one can get extremely good results with a perfectly ordinary stock design.
 
I dumped my 10PC into a Choate tactical stock when I still owned it. It was a nice stock for the money but fairly thick in places, so if you have smallish hands you might not like the feel.

Does the Savage 10 PC have a 17" twist barrel? that os the gold standard for 30BR incredible cartridge and one of the best ever in shooting Benchrest for score.

You don't need a muzzle break on a 308.
 
Pavmentsurfer - Have a look at the Manners stocks as well, little pricey but thing of beauty.

Reads as if you have a .223 - muzzle break will make it louder but between the low case volume and weight of the rifle it may not do much more than that (weight could also affect barrel harmonics and accuracy). That money may be more useful towards a barrel or stock.

Icedragonmx - mind sharing the details of your handloads (bullet, powder, charge, brass...).

Went through the process to import a couple of the 9 round mags for the .308 version. Hopefully with the higher import limit these will become more easily available soon.
