i'm sure there's probably been tons of threads like this before but looking into my first AR, budget is sub $2000. I'm feeling a lot of love for DD so if it was between a M4 V5 and an MK18, what would your choice be?? Just looking for something that's quality, reliable and versatile as well. How much does accuracy suffer with the 10" bbl? better to start with the longer one? no plans of what to do with it so that doesn't make it any easier to narrow down... just for fun for now!

Thanks for any info!!

Im trying to decide between the same 2 right now! Was just about to post also. Very interested in similarities between the two other than barrel length.

I have an LMT 10.5" I don't know if it's an MK18, but it's the same lenght and it's made by LMT.

I'm very happy with it. Only 200 rounds, but 100% reliable. I was affraid that 10.5 AR were not reliable with all horror story in the internet. That's why I go with LMT. I saw that they were able to do a very reliable 10.5ar15, by putting good buffer, perfect gaz hole, and good BCG.

To be honest, I just got my dd m4v5 in the mail today, it's 16 inches, and they're a lot smaller than you may think. I was in the same boat, wanting a 10.5, my dad told me I should get the 16 incher cause it'll make it shoot more accurately further out and really, 5.5 inches is nothing especially with the increased usabilility of the firearm. So I decided on the v5 and I'm glad I didn't go 10.5.

i am leaning towards the M4 V5, i just really like the looks of the mk18 but i suppose the v5 is probably more versatile overall and what not. don't know enough about AR's to really say, but that's the direction i'm headed right now. probably wait to get something shorter or more of a CQB later on. lots of time for everything right???

It depend on your intended purpose.

A 10.5" is fine up to 200 yards good accuracy, but not enough velocity to be accurate past 250-300y

A 16" will get more velocity, but no more accuracy.

You'll be happy with both. Personally I think 14.5 is a good AR15 barrel lenght. That's why I get both a 14.5 and a 10.5 :)

Noveske MK 18 would be nice, try looking at Vltor A5 stock if you you go with a 10.5 bbl.

ah good stuff! i was kind of wondering how far out it would be effective to. truthfully, i don't think i'd have any real purpose for trying to shoot past 200 with any AR anyway. where might one find a good 14.5? i was kind of wanting something in the middle anyway but couldn't really find much. of course, i'm probably not looking in the right place...

And your noveske will be a lot more money.

I was impressed with the size and handling of the 10.5" NEA-15 I played with. Same with the Norc 10.5s I've handled at the range.

The reliability and machining of those though? Nevermind, I won't make another of those threads.

When it comes down to it though, what's 1.5 inches extra? Daniel defense makes excellent firearms. I'd just go with the v5. I guarantee you won't be disappointed

Both rifles are fine. No reliability issue, good finish, good accuracy.......

The real question is do you want a 16" or a 10.5" barrel???

Up to 200y there is no difference in accuracy. The 10.5 have less velocity, but will the target notice that ???

It's your choice :)

haha true! should just get two uppers and save myself the grief!! maybe one day but i guess i'll just start with one for now. work my way up right? i was looking at Noveske and KAC but the price was a bit high for me... i'm sure it's probably money well spent but from what I'm hearing it's hard to beat DD at the price they offer it. i'll try to get my hands on an MK18 before deciding for sure but the V5 was pretty nice when i handled it. damn! how do you AR guys do it? i want them all!

EASY! We get them all!! Haha

I've got a 16" and a 10.5" and honestly I use the 10.5 a lot more. If you're buying for distance and accuracy get a bolt gun, if you're buying for running and gunning fun with multiple targets and drills get an AR. I use mine at max out to 100yrds, I have reached out further, but its all dependent on your use and what you like. Good luck with your search!!

And now I'm looking at 12.5"s

First off....don`t listen to your Dad....EVER....get what you want. Most guys (pro`s included) can`t out shoot their hardware. Here are a couple of mine that I just built...Basically a M4A1 SOPMOD Block 2 (14.5" SOCOM barrel) and MK18 MOD 1 Block 2....as authentic as anyone can get...enjoy!

Hi, I've had my V5 for about a month now and it does seem small and light compared to my XCR. If it's your first AR, I think it's a great starting point and then can mod or sell that model very easily if you decide it's too long later on. The length of the gun overall is not going to be an issue for whatever type of shooting you decide to do with it though IMHO.

When in doubt, choose the 16" barrel. I would consider the 16" barrel with mid-length gas tube to be the best all-around AR configuration.
