I know what your thinking, been beat to death. Ok here goes anyway. I am a new hunter ( started last year ) and during deer season I didn't see one deer. I mean not even on the highway period during hunting season,I think they know. My first rifle purchased was an SKS. I understand there are haters out there, however that is the rifle I will be hunting deer with. Promised myself I would get a deer with it before purchasing real hunting rifle. What do you folks think of this caliber for Whitetail? Open sights, no funky scope mount for me.

Since you haven't posted your location, I'm pretty sure, here in Ontario anyway, your not allowed to hunt with an SKS.
But to answer your question, a 7.62 X 39, 123g soft point should take down a whitetail. I have a few friends that hunt whitetail with a .243 claibre rifel and they say it works great on whitetail and it also great for coyote hunting too.

I have my .308 for longer range, but since most of my hunting is in wooded areas where most shots are under 75 yards i have been thinking about using a 7.62x39 rifle as a nice light walking through the woods gun.

Have at 'er and good luck!

I'd love a quote from the hunting regs to back this up.

Can't say I have seen anything that would lead me to believe you though.

I'd say it wouldn't be terribly clever to run around the woods with a fixed bayonet, but as someone who has read the Ontario regs cover to cover more than once, I can tell you there is no such reference to be found, unless it is a very recent addition!

If you're in the woods, or anywhere that the range will be 100 yds or less, then the sks is fine. If you can keep your shots inside a paper plate, using soft point ammo, then your good to go. Just make your shot good like you would with any calibre.

Think they are refering to the .270 calibre restriction in southern ontario, .308 is larger than .270.

Most of those areas are shotgun/muzzle/bow only for deer anyways......

The one poster referred to the bayonet specificalaly!

Like the guy who told me yesterday that it is illegal to bait deer in Ontario........

If you don't know what your talking about, take 5 minutes to look it up before commenting!

Couldn't tell you where i heard it, seems likely it was a rumour or a reg from somewhere else, i've never looked it up as i've never hunted with a rifle that had a bayo

Keep your shots within a hundred yards.

And for those that think 7.62x39 won't drop a deer....

Your SKS will do fine for deer hunting. Just make sure you use proper hunting ammo & not milsurp stuff. The milsurp ammo is FMJ (full metal jacket) & will not expand like a proper hunting bullet. They just pencil right through the animal & it will run off & die somewhere where you will have a hard time finding it! As others have said, keep your shots within 150 yrds & you are good to go. Also there are no restrictions on using the SKS for deer hunting in Ontario that I am aware of. Some area's of Southern Ontario have caliber restrictions & some areas are shotgun only. Just be sure you don't fit into those categories & you will be fine.

I have shot 3 whitetail deer with a SKS-D works fine out to 100 yards or a little more. The 7.62x39 has about the same power as a 30-30, just use soft point ammo and place your shots.

I've been hunting in Ontario with an SKS for three years, bayonet attached. I also use it as my go to wilderness protection gun for extended canoe trips in the summer. Both CO's in the area are buddies of mine, and they have no problem with it.
