I hope some of you folks in BC can clarify something for me. Is it legal in BC to hunt from a motorized boat as long as the motor is turned off? The regs are a bit ambiguous. I read it as no, but I've been talking to some guys out there who say as long as you shut the motor off before loading the gun and firing, you're fine.

Thanks.

the motor CANNOT be readily usable so keys out of ignition, leg up or teather cord off and tilted up (if aplicable) some even pop fuel line off just to save argument

So technically, some yahoo could cruise a river in a jet boat (no motor to raise out of the water), see a moose, turn the ignition off (keys out) and start banging away? Or have is buddy start shooting as soon as the keys are out? In Ontario we can't hunt from any vehicle with a motor attached, regardless of whether it is running or not. If it is not human powered (paddles), you have to beach it, get out, then load your gun. Same rules as a truck. This also includes things being towed by a motorized boat (guy sitting in a raft that is towed by a boat also can not shoot or have a loaded firearm).

^As long as the current is the only thing propelling the boat forward, I guess you could, yes. I'm now envisioning a jet boat with a hanging pole instead of a skiing pole...

If you're lucky, you come around a bend in the river and a herd of elk are crossing in front of you. You steer for shore, shut down the boat & pull the keys while you slide to a stop on the gravel bar. Your partner steadys his crosshairs on the bull...boom...now the work begins :)

you can shoot out of a boat but the motion adds to the excitement. i shot a moose from a 10 foot inflatable. timing the shot as the boat undulated was fun. i was lying prone shooting over a pack. good thing it was only about 75 yrds.

That would make it difficult to float hunt down a slow moving river.

http://www.bclaws.ca/EPLibraries/bclaws_new/document/ID/freeside/00_96145_01

read section 9
9 (1) Unless authorized by the regulations or a permit, a person must not discharge, carry or have in the person's possession, in or on a railway car, hand car or other vehicle on a railway, or in or on a motor vehicle, wagon, sleigh, aircraft, bicycle or other conveyance, a firearm containing live ammunition in its breech or in its magazine.
(2) A person who contravenes subsection (1) commits an offence.

................

" any other conveyance " can include a boat .

BUT ;

read section 27 a here ,

27 (1) A person who discharges a firearm or wounds or kills wildlife from a motor vehicle or from a boat that is propelled by a motor commits an offence .

[h=2]Hunting from a Boat[/h]Hunters are permitted to hunt from a power boat as long as the motor is turned off (not in operation) and the boat has stopped its forward progress before firing commences.

Ya, that's why I posted the original question. When I was told about some of the hunting from boats on the Stikine, I was curious because in Ontario it is completely off limits. No loaded gun or shooting from a motor boat regardless of whether or not the motor is out of the water. So I checked the BC regs and read the same stuff you did. It's written a bit ambiguous, but it appears to be legal. I called my brother in law who is best buds with a CO and he confirmed it.
