THINKING OF BUYING AN SKS and making it look like an AK -47 .. HELP PLEASE

There was a thread around here where a member took a lot of time and effort to do just that. Turned out beautiful! I remember seeing the pics like 2 years ago I think so it's hazy. But it's certainly possible!

Well it is possible, you would be further ahead to start with a CZ-858 right off the bat. It comes looking a little similar to an AK right out of the box and is a much better rifle than the SKS. The money you would spend dolling up an SKS would equal or exceed that of the CZ, little of which is retained in resale value.

Get an SKS, leave it as it is, shoot it. Save up some money and when the Type 81 becomes available, buy one. The SKS is not, and never will be, anything like an AK (having owned and shot both quite extensively) and all the bolt on junk in the world won't change that. Sorry, but saying anything else is blowing smoke up your *ss.

I don't understand what you mean by this?

You can buy the tapco T6 stock which gives it a tacti-cool stock to add any scope mountings, etc. and a more usable pistol grip and hand guard.

I was thinking about the frontier firearms Mforgery SKS in the tapco stock with rail and front hand grip myself.
Would it still be better to just get a russian SKS and use it as is, maybe with a red dot at most?

Are the tapco stocks pretty decent?
Not the same as a cz858, but is the M4 tapco stock more comfortable and easier to shoulder/aim than the original stock?
I cant see the non-pistol grip stock being as comfortable when holding for any length of time?

itll never be anything like an ak, as it shouldnt, but from a fun gun or hunting small game, would the tapco tacticool version be easier to use and more comfortable than the original stock?

I'm looking to get an sks as well, and not sure if i should stick to a laminated one all original otherwise, or the m4 chinese one from frontier.

thanks

THANKS FOR SHOWING ME THAT SKS m4 - ....

if it was russian rather than Chinese I may have bought it! plus the pistol grip is weaksauce!!

I think what buddy said about cz being 700 and SKS tapco'd not being close to that is price wise...

an sks is 200$.... + tapco stock (80$-150$)... and that's all I would really throw on the SKS... maybe scope MAX lol.. not close to 700$ cz858

so right now I am leaning towards the ruger 10/22 (or sr-22) as my 22 plinjer... and a SKS + tapco kit to make it look cool...

thanks bro and let me know what you think!

Tapco would also be more comfortable to shoot if you're closer to normal size. The SKS was originally developed for stunted, malnourished people who were just leaving serfdom behind. I'll personally go with a buttpad to start, but most likely will be getting an aftermarket stock eventually. If you decide to mount optics, make sure they're the ones that attatch to the receiver (yes, you will have to drill/tap) as opposed to receiver cover mounts (as they tend to be beaten to crap and quickly lose their zero even by SKS standards).

Dont fall into the trap of NOT upgrading your SKS to better fit YOU because some people think you should leave the poorly made, ergonomically incorrect and ugly factory stock installed because some russian in 1950 thought it was the best design. Thats like buying an old big block chevy just to get the motor but leaving the body on it because the new stuff isnt better now... not true.

If your looking to have a nostalgic or collector gun, keep the factory stock. If your looking for a fun gun that fits a normal size person comfortably and pleases the eye... by all means up grade it. My Tapco stock worked great while i had it. Stay away from the lighter colors as they get dirty looking very fast. Ive also held the dragonuv style stock and it feels really good to shoulder but needs a scope mount... the irons are pretty much usless with that setup.

You can also get some very nice wood stocks that have a more modern design and length of pull from Timbersmith. They arent cheap, but they do make an SKS look like a modern hunting rifle IMO.

thank you guys!! I was looking at the czech ak look-a-likes..

so you recommend that gun over a SKS turned into cheapo ak?

THANK YOU

The VZ58 (or Sa.58 in Czech), is a completely different gun. It shares some commonality in appearance with the AK because the Czechs were presumably forced to do this by their Soviet overlords at the Kremlin. That said, many would consider the VZ58 to be a superior firearm to the AK47, with the only drawback in the design being the aluminum magazines.

you are right, a tapco stock will not make the sks look anything like an AK. not even remotely close.

yes, this is the closest mod I have seen to make an sks look like a ak!

this is what I came up with though. its not an ak look but its not what I was going for

The cz just starts out closer to the appearence that you want. There was a member on CGN that was making AK look alike stocks to fit on cz's. They looked very nice, much nicer than any AK stock that I ever saw. For what its worth thats what I would do.
