This arrived today. The "price match" Chinese 7.62x54R from Canada Ammo.

The case markings are non-typical. Note the conventional Chinese markings on the bottom line and the different style stenciling above that. I wonder if it was marked that way for a customer by the Chinese or it's found it's way to us through eastern Europe and been re-marked along the way. According to the sticker I pulled off, it was imported by Marstar. One of the wood cases was in terrible condition with what looked like plaster applied into some of the cracks.

I'm quite happy with this purchase and can't wait to try some out.

Thanks to Canada Ammo!

Anyone recognize the language in the top 3 lines of markings?

The spams cans have a fair bit of oxidation and the pull handles are rusty.

Cardboard over the ammo packets.

22 packets of 20 rounds.

No sign of oxidation or moisture on the inside of the cans and the ammo is bright and shiny.

A .50 BMG can will hold 30 packets perfectly, for a total of 600 rounds to a can.

It sure looks nice and clean!

I'm curious what marking are on the headstamp?

You know, I didn't even look. Should be 71 over 67 by the case markings but I'll double check in the morning.

Edit: picked up a tip on another board that it may be from Albanian stocks, so I checked with an online Albanian/English translator. In Albanian, "Gezhoj" translates into "cartridge", and "celiku" is "steel", so that source seems quite likely.

It sure stored well.

If it is anything like my 60's vintage Chicom 7.62x39mm, I'll bet it is fairly accurate but smells like rotten eggs when you fire it.

And as you already know, it's corrosive.

I shoot 10 times more corrosive ammo than non.:)

I didn't notice any odd smell today. I fired 10 rounds through my Polish M44 just to check it out. After shooting Hungarian heavy ball for the last few years the light ball was a real nice treat. No split necks or shoulders and easy extraction. Two thumbs up.

And yes, it is headstamped 71 over 67.

Hmmm, I guess they used a powder that doesn't reek in that caliber.

Sorry, I just assumed that all vintage Chinese ammo stunk.

I'm glad to hear it cycled fine with a light recoil, how was the accuracy?

I just shot to check for function. I was busy changing target boards and the snow was kinda annoying for shooting decent groups.

Don't know what the core is, I haven't cut one apart yet.

Did you say snow? Shudder!

Man, Winter is coming early this year.

I guess you didn't have a berm to dig into to examine the bullets, eh?

I shot various brands of 7.62x39mm into a sand and gravel berm a few years ago, and dug out as many as I could afterwards for a comparison.

The lead cores really fragmented a lot. The steel cores seperated from the jacket but remained intact.

Yeah, we've got about 1 cm on the ground right now, but there was probably about 3 cm total. It's supposed to be 11C on Tuesday, though.

They did go into the berm, but it's clay and not conducive to digging out projectiles.
