I recall reading these stories in PS magazine years ago and I am thrilled to see it was republished on-line. Very interesting views on barrel life, seating depths, case prep, neck tension and the inportance of a properly trued and installed barrel. It is generally centered around benchrest shooting, but the pronciples apply to many types of precision shooting.

really good read

I read this a while ago. Very interesting.

I'll have to read it again when I get some time.

Thanks for reminding me about it.

Great read! One question, if someone can help out here: what do Virgil and the author mean when they say "arc"?

i.e.

Virgil: “I didn’t tell you about how I finally got my 22PPC to arc.”

Author: “Arc?” I responded dully.

Virgil: “Arc,” he repeated. “There was one final thing I discovered late in the game. It had the rifle down to a consistent .025"in the warehouse.”

Sounds important, given the group size he's quoting!

There was the reference to shooting groups as big as the gap on a spark plug. I read it to mean "arc" as when you have things perfectly tuned, like a spark plug, or when welding, just the right distance to arc and make a perfect spark.

We still don't know how it got it to shoot better though.

We may never know I guess.
