THINKING OF BUYING AN SKS and making it look like an AK -47 .. HELP PLEASE

Dont fall into the trap of NOT upgrading your SKS to better fit YOU because some people think you should leave the poorly made, ergonomically incorrect and ugly factory stock installed because some russian in 1950 thought it was the best design. Thats like buying an old big block chevy just to get the motor but leaving the body on it because the new stuff isnt better now... not true.

If your looking to have a nostalgic or collector gun, keep the factory stock. If your looking for a fun gun that fits a normal size person comfortably and pleases the eye... by all means up grade it. My Tapco stock worked great while i had it. Stay away from the lighter colors as they get dirty looking very fast. Ive also held the dragonuv style stock and it feels really good to shoulder but needs a scope mount... the irons are pretty much usless with that setup.

You can also get some very nice wood stocks that have a more modern design and length of pull from Timbersmith. They arent cheap, but they do make an SKS look like a modern hunting rifle IMO.

Those timbersmith stocks are drop dead gorgeous.

you double-poster you! this one seems to have more attention so I'll just leave this here:

Type 81 - coming next year (hopefully)

well if looks and cheap price are all that interests you then by all means tapcof**k an SKS. If ending up with a heavier, less accurate, more difficult to use rifle that holds almost no resale value is fine then the SKS is your gun. Ive been down that road and came to the conclusion I like the SKS just the way Simonov and later the Chinese made them. The CZ is vastly superior in every way IMO. Having owned close to 10 SKS and now on my 2nd 858 and planning a third, I feel Ive found the strengths and weaknesses of each for the most part. For cheap plinking I do like the SKS but I havent done much of that in a while. For more serious shooting Ill take a bone stock 858 over any SKS any day. Add a few mods to the 858 and you can get them performing on a similar level to the AR. Just my humble experience and shiny 2 cents...

Probably the closest you'll get with a SKS, complete with Russian optics:

It was mine, had a custom stock that was made by another member here (SoLdNeR), I sold it to another member here. It looked sweet, and was quite solid. Personally I felt it made the gun front heavy and it didn't handle as nice as the factory SKS. After everything I did to my rifle, I found I preferred the wood stock. Anyways I have a CZ with a bunch of goodies now and it's 100x faster handling, lighter, better balanced, and feels generally more solid. If I was to do up another SKS, I would probably leave it with the factory wood, and put another side mount on it. Just my 2cents, I like the SKS in it's battle rifle role.

can you replace the fixed magazine with a detachable one while keeping the original laminated stock?
id like to get 5 round or 5/30 tapco magazines but use the original laminated stock
i read you can remove it after removing the trigger assembly, put the trigger assembly back together and then you can use the tapco mags that has the built in adapters, or do you need to installer an adapter before using tapco mags?

just wondering if i have to move to the tapco stock to use the detachable mags?

See post 19, you will have to remove material from the wood stock to get the tapco mag to fit though
