Savage Mark II bolt action question...

Hi everyone,
This is my first post and like to say that I'm pleased to found this forum. I'm from Quebec so please excuse my bad english, I'm doing my best.

I'm a new in the rifle world, took my license this year but really enjoy going at the range. I find that shooting is like yoga for me, when I'm doing that, I don't think about anything else..anyhow, I own a Remington 700 270 win (my hunting rifle), a Savage Varmint 25 .223 and a Savage Mark II BRJ/22LR...I love this rifle at the range, it's accurate, beautiful, but the bolt action is the reason I'm here.

When I purchase it, about 2 months ago, I found the action a little tight, by looking at it, I realized that on this rimfire, the hole bolt have a contact point since there is no lugs at the end like on my centerfire. After reading similar issues on the web, I decided to disassemble the bolt action, polish and jeweled the front part. By doing this, the action was going well but was not smooth so I polish the jewel to a mirror finish. I have to say that I never touch the end of the bolt, the part that touch the end of the receiver. So now, the bolt is smooth but not as I wish...I tried a SS version of the Mark II at the range and the bolt was almost friction free.

Now, I'm wondering a couple of thing. Could I remove to much material at some places on the bolt to make my rifle less accurate/safe? Can I order a new bolt assembly from Savage, if yes does a rimfire need the bolt to be lapped by a gunsmith? If the bolt can be replaced, can I change it to a stainless version? Is savage the only parts source?

I know some of my question may sound stupid...I'm a newbie and a perfectionnist, I like when thing are done the right way.

BTW, I tried a bunch of oil, drilube...without success.

Thanks for your help.

Emmanuel

how many rounds do you have threw the gun. my cz 452 took around 7-800 to smooth out. i had another rifle that was draging on the magazine lip as well. many things cause a sticky bolt. i would try to find the tight spot.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I shoot around 700-800 rounds with this rifle and since the bolt was polished to a mirror finish, I clearly see the "friction" spot. There is on at the front of the bolt but I wonder if too much material can be removed around the bolt if I don't touch the end.

What I don't understand is that I polished it, jeweled it, re-polished it there is still some tight spot...can it become too smooth by removing (with a polisher) too much?

Your only working on half of the problem, and likely not the part that is giving you the trouble.

It may be the action itself that needs to be smoother out if there is any burrs, or high spots.

Problem is that if you are messing with the locking points on the action or bolt you can take off too much material and affect the headspace.

I would stick to simply polishing and try not to take any material off.

There is lapping compounds that you can buy that you apply to the bolt and action and work it a whole lot to polish such spots.

I had some one come to me with that kind of problem a while back. If you have a scope base mounted on it make sure a mounting screw is not to long and protruding down through the action and touching the bolt.
I have seen this happen more than once, just a thought?

Thanks for the tip, that would have been too easy I guess...I just checked and no screw are protruding. I contacted Savage this morning and they refer me to a gunsmith about 30 min. from where I live, I'll meet him this week and give a update.

I went to a authorized Savage gunsmith near from where I live. Very nice guy, he checked everything, polish a small portion of the bolt that was still in contact, put a oil (the brand Wurth) that is a little ticker than the usual gun oil and now the bolt is smooth like butter. He confirm that Savage's Rimfire bolt are on the rough side, he usually polish it as part as a normal service.

I'm very glad to have found a gunsmith that don't sell firearm...for him, everything is repairable or replaceable.

now buy a dozen or so bricks, and take that savage out for some real smooth fun shooting. Enjoy mon ami!!!
You are right, this rifle is so much fun, at 50 yards, with those cheap Blazer ammo, I shoot under 1/4 grouping...and the gunsmith sold me a box of Eley ammo (branded Remington on the box), I shot 10 rounds in the same hole, no joke. Those bullet are expensive at 9$ for a box of 50 but worth a try.

Does anyone know if those Eley are available online...maybe cheaper than what I paid?
