is there a formula for justifying it's cost though?
I mean, reloading you can solidly quantify your numbers.
# reloads x $ component cost + equipment cost = Y
Y times number of rounds shot/month = Z
Number of rounds shot/month times factory price = V
Z-V = savings
you can factor your time in there, but not improvement of performance.
I own many guns, but really only shoot 3 of them on a regular basis. The rest sit locked up, so no, I don't use them enough to justify owning them.... except I have the spare cash to own them, so f--k it!
The main thing stopping me from shooting every other night is a) the range is closed by the time I would get off work b) it's a 40 minute drive if the traffic is good -- which it wouldn't be after work. It's sad but that's the reality.
I am not to worry, they are spread in 3 safes, in 3 houses, in 2 provinces and they are all non restricted, in the last month, sold 55 rifles and shotguns, i gave 7 to my grandchilds ( one each, they got to pick from all except the 25 i decided to keep) about 16 off those were on the EE but family and friends of club members really kept me busy, so by spring i should be down to those 25 choosen on, and i mmmmay add a fffew others ones (read many) along the way... JP.
I wear my Montreal Canadians lama keeper hat when i shoot at the club, after that i do with my rifle like Guy Lafleur did with is hockey stick an the puck... Top corner... JP.

Exactly my situation. I live near Downtown Vancouver, and it is the one thing that sucks about it. Minimum 40 minutes, often more like an hour.
The way i look at it though is i will probably have the thing for 30 years and therefore the actual cost per year isn't all that bad. So even if i only get out a few times a year it isn't all that bad.
5000~ rounds in 12 months through my Swiss Black Special
About 2000~ in the last 4.5 months through my Classic Green
So, Yes, I think I shoot enough to justify the rifles, even two of them
Honestly though, I selected : My black rifles awesome, but I wish I shot it more.
I still wish I had more time and money to put more rounds down range. You can never have too much ammo, and you can never ever shoot "too much", training makes you better, so why not keep doing it. You want rounds down range in a hurry try going down South and doing a 2 day advanced carbine course, or better yet, some of the high risk security type/Infantry courses they run down in the states, you could easily run 2500 rounds in 4-5 day course. Some of them list the supplies you'll need to bring and for a 2 day course your looking at 800-1500 carbine rounds, then the 4-5 day courses are asking for closer to 2500-3000 carbine rounds. The guys I have seen in Canada that teach what they call Carbine courses are pretty hilarious when compared to down South
