Anyone have a general idea on what it might cost to have a barrel cut back a couple of inches, recrowned then reblued while re-installing the factory front site ? ( will they have to reblue the whole barrel or just the tip???? )

Usually you can get a barrel cut for the price of recrowning it. About 25-30 bucks.

Rates for drilling and tapping run about $20 a hole give or take. You can smear a bit of cold blue on the muzzle, its going to burn off in a few shots anyway just like the factory blueing does.

Why bother with bluing the crown? Many rifles were crowned after bluing...

I would guess it would cost $75 + or - to cut, crown and install the factory front sight... if the sight was originally installed with screws...

Just curious, does that include the time for the gunsmith to take the barrel off and set it back on and everything?

Total cost might depend on how the work is performed. Hacksaw, file, and use a piloted hand tool is pretty fast. Set the barrel up on the lathe, indicate the bore in, and then crown is going to cost more. Remounting a screwed on front sight ramp can be a pita.

Is there any particular reason that the smith would want to remove the tube? As long as the barrel will fit through the bore on the chuck and the action isn't so big or weirdly shaped that it couldn't spin, I'd probably just as soon not have the barrel removed unnecessarily.
