Cell service trail cams ?

I used a smartscouter last year and part of this year. It is now in the dump. Way to long of a story however suffice it to say it did work sometime but not enough to be worth the cost of operation. Poor picture quality and cost are not worth it. The principle is good but I don't think the quality is there - at least not yet. I bought a reconyx and it is superb.

If the manufacturers actually got together with a Canadian cell phone provider to offer a pay per use service - like Amazon Kindle - it would be worth considering. As of now, as far as I know, you would have to buy a pay as you go sim card, load it up, and then periodically reload it because there is an expiry date on those minutes. Not to mention the obligatory 911 access charges.

Cell enabled UWAY trail camera...$329. Sim card...$20. No term, no contract, unlimited text message plan...$15 per month. Not driving to your hunting camp a couple hours each way every week to check regular trail cams...PRICELESS.

That is a hell of alot less than the smartscouter deal I had going. I will be looking into that. The cost of fuel is exactly what I was trying to avoid with the same type set up. Thanks for the heads up.

This is why I asked the question about only having 1 maby 2 bars as well.

Where I would like to put one my iPhone with bell gets bairly 1 bar. But it does get it. I looked at the Canadian uway and it looks good. But will it work with 1 bar?

i have a cam called a Covert Code Black cam. You should look into these cams they are really incredible technology. it has an 8 mp cam on it capable of sending emails and texts to smart phones. I have mine setup at my cabin in the bush for security purposes only.

Thanks Vince

i had to buy an antenna for it as there is no cell service on ground level. I went up a jack pine about 20 feet and hung the antenna there. the antenna has a 10 ft lead. I have a pay as youu go plan with rogers that costs about 15 a month. reception depends on the day if it is clear i get my pics, cloudy day i get nothing. regardless it is a handy tool and i really love the pics it takes.

I spoke to the folks at Uway yesterday and they told me they are coming out with a new camera hopefully in January that will work off any 3G network. That may give some of us a little more flexibility with our regular carriers.

i use spypoint ,,, it works fine my me ,,,, i am notified right away when a pic is taken , and i can look at it almost right away , and i am on fido, love it

son of a !!!!! i love their cameras! now i'm going to end up with more of them hahaha

i own 2 of their current cellular versions and i can't get over how much i like them! (i also have a bucket full of the nt50B's)

Necro thread but was wondering if anyone had tried any newer cell cams?

Are there any cams that can work with an existing cell service? I am with Bell and have a 10gig plan. Was hoping i could use the same plan for a cam as well so i dont have to pay another monthly fee.

Thanks guys i hope i can find one that would allow me to use my current plan (which has unlimited txt and 10g data) so i dont need to spend an additional 15-25 a month. 100 pics free a month is good but id be setting up on a food plot which would mean lots of pics (here's hoping lol).

I also vouch for this model. It's a bit tedious to configure, but once you have it working it just works. Can work with or without 3G service
