The quintessential Canadian pistol

I'm in the market for my first 'real' pistol (I currently have a .22lr pistol)

My list is down to: Beretta 92FS, CZ 75B, CZ Shadow, or a 1911 of some lineage in 45 ACP.

I would prefer something in 9mm because of ammo cost.

My biggest pet peeve comes down to magazine capacity. It irks me that the Beretta and CZ's feel are stunted by artificial magazine capacity limits. They were designed for more than 10 rounds so I feel like I'm carry around extra weight and volume for nothing. This is one of the big reasons I lean toward the 1911 platform.

Are there other guns I should be looking at that have been designed for up to a 10 round capacity?

When I saw the title, the Hi Power is what came to mind.

In the end, get the gun that fits well in your hand. You can afford. And one you like.

Or pick one off the list. Then buy the next one on the list, etc......

That's easy choice.
If you are leaving the ideology behind, RIA 9mm or 45 ACP Tactical may serve you well.

I would say BHP.


I would rather own a Glock 17, M&P9, P30, USP9 or P226, but if what you want is something specifically with a Canadian tie-in, that would be the BHP.

Considering that the BHP was designed by an American and at best license built in Canada way back when I'd have to suggest that the "Canadian Connection" is still at best somewhat nebulous.

Sadly we have no truly Canadian designed and built handgun that I know of. At best we've got Canadian made clones of American or other origin designs. So one of these clones is the best we can manage.

Given that I seem to recall that the currently available BHP's are built by FN in Belgium. Is that right? Assuming it is I'd like to offer the Dlask 1911's built out here on the West Coast as a decently viable "Canadian" offering.

Actually no, most of the design work was completed after JNB's death by a Belgian named Dieudonne Saive, speculation is that Browning had little to do with it other than outlining the concept. I do agree though that it's the quintessential Canadian pistol.

I would dearly love a Dlask "Slick"...

I own a Beretta 92fs as well as a CZ Shadow.Both great gun's but the Shadow is around $200.00 cheaper and imo more accurate and just as well made.I would choose a Sig for the .45..If you want to find something much less expensive for a first time .45 purchase,go for a Norinco you can't go wrong for the price(around $400 Canada Ammo)....

Para Ordnance USED to be made in Scarborough, Ontario. Moved to Pineville, North Carolina no doubt because of assinine regulations that simply don't stop multiplying.

The quintessential: Webley, Enfield #2, Browning HP though they are not domestic designs, some were produced here. Come to think of it, I don't think anyone from Canada has designed a handgun... That's sad! Para is noted for designing a high cap magazine for the pre-existing 1911, of course John Garand, a man from Canada is famous for desiging a well known autoloading service rifle.

Actually, Canada has never adopted any Webley revolver - nor any other British design - as a primary (or even secondary, really) military-issue handgun!

Almost everyone recommending (correctly, in my view) the Hi-Power so far has missed one very important word: "Inglis".
The pistols built in Canada by Inglis in 1944-45 (over 150,000 of them) are actually what would qualify as the quintessential Canadian handgun .....

Canada's primary-issue military handgun for nearly 70 years ...... 1945 through 2012, and still serving!

(They have been talking about replacing the Inglis H.P for years now ..... but they are still soldiering on!)
