Remington help!

Well, I don't need this to turn into a bunch of posts of what a POS I bought. I'm aware. My question is simply where do I go from here?

Here's the situation...

Two months ago I bought a Remington 770 in .270 (yeah I know). The bolt would stay stuck closed almost binding after firing. To the point where i would have to stand the gun on the back of the stock and very firmly hit the bolt handle to get it to release. I checked the casings to make sure there wasn't anything unusual on them and they were fine. I took it back to where I bought it and asked them if they could take a look at it for me, which they did and after a month I got it back with them telling me they "changed the selector screw" (Which they charged me for). Not knowing too much yet about firearms, I didn't question them thinking that they found something simple and fixed the problem. I was pleased.

I took it out today for some target practice and some plinking with my new .22.. It did the exact same thing. First shot fired, bolt jams.. Then trying to remove it, the handle brakes clean off. So here I am now with a gun I can't even use and don't know which direction to go. Try and get the bold replaced? Try to contact remington? Try to sell it???

Any suggestions or advice would be great.
 
I would first take it up with the retailer you bought it from. Failing that, contact Remington directly. This should be a warranty issue - if it needs a new bolt, you also have to get it headspaced. This on a 700 is worth doing but it on a 770, it would cost more than the gun is worth.
No matter how it plays out, I would replace it with something decent.
 
Have you tried the warranty route yet?
That would be my first step and failing that (bought used maybe ?)
I seriously would look at a new gun ( with warranty ) and chock this as a learning experience ...
What ammo where you using?
Factory and brand name and caliber would help others more knowledgeable than I in assisting you further.

I will inquire where I bought it although I'm not holding my breath and really, It isn't their responsability, which I understand...

I haven't tried the warranty route yet, I'm preparing for the upcoming runaround, but I will definitely be contacting them in the least to give them the negative feedback.
I'm hoping I can actually get through and talk to someone but am really not looking forward to the hassle of shipping it off and hoping for the best.

I'm already starting to shop for another gun but given the current funds, I'm thining I'm going to be down and out for deer season.

Frustrated beyond belief.
 
What the hell is a selector screw
skhunter could it be the screw that holds the safety selector ?
I am not familiar with the Rem. 770 series, but gather it is a lil less expensive than a Rem 700 sps.
I have dealt with Remington many years ago in Delaware and they where very friendly and helpful even when the Warranty Repair guys said it was fault.
Anyways, another phone call back to Delaware and the gun shop on Fraser St. got the message and it was fixed no charge...
Do you have any pictures of the shells after they where extracted and the broken bolt?
I googled 770 and found the web site(Remington) but was unable to open the adobe files showing the owners manual and schematics for the gun as well.
Just asking is all.

Well if you can afford to start over that is what I would do. Send that gun back to Rem. have it repaired so it will function properly, then trade up for something of better quality. FS
 
my brother bought 1 last year in 7mm rem, mag, and when i tried it, i can't even load ammo in it, bolt head was for a smaller caliber. rifle was stamped to the good caliber with good barrel and everything, only the bolt was bad. he return it to store who sent it back to remington. took a few weeks to get it back.
 
Its too bad that Remington continues to market that thing. The warranty route seems like your best option, but because the resolution will take several weeks, if that is your only big game rifle you should purchase something in the meantime to get you out hunting before the season ends. Consider one of the quality used Husqvarna rifles being sold by Tradex whose banner appears at the top of the page. If you call and explain your situation to them, they'll get something good out to you without it costing you your first born, their honesty and customer service is beyond reproach.
 
I talked to someone today at remington who seemed to be understanding and got me set up to return it tomrrow to get either fixed or replaced. I don't know what the actual outcome will be but I'd definitely be inclined to try and dump it when I get it back (if it gets fixed that is..). However, I can't see it being worth much. In the meantime I am going to try and generate some cash to get into another big game gun seeing as how that was my only one. I may look into tradex, thanks for the tip. Also Check the EE.

Thanks for not turning this into a total flame fest, as at the time when I bought it I didn't have much knowledge about the new hobby. Live and learn.
 
If they replace it, I would not even shoot it once - you will get more for one which is unfired. You unfortunately will take a bit of beating on it, but don't worry about it. It happens to all of us at one time or another.
If it was me, I would take my money from the sale of the 770, top it up a bit and buy something decent.
