Interesting Precison Rifle Build

With my SASS project (Savage Axis Stock Surgery) complete and my DMR (Designated Marksman Rifle) project nearing completion, I am now looking for another project to take on- preferrably one I can build, as this winter is going to be a long, boring one for me.

I'd like something interesting. Maybe historical, maybe not. But it defintely needs to function properly. As with all djmay71 porjects, I like to tacticool my projects to the max.

I was originally thinking of M40A1, but after an extensive search- they are far and few, and a tad out of my initial price range, which is approximately $200-$300.
Now I'm thinking of doing a Remmy / TAC 21 build, but something makes me think it's sort of unoriginal. Or am I wrong?

last year, I was in a similar situations
my garage is a small machine shop and did not have lots of buget to build a target rifle
so I picked up a rusted swede mauser and a new m38 barrel from tradex, trued the action and built an aluminium fully adjustable modular stock from a 2"X2" I got at the local scrap yard

Get another Axis, find a heavy barrel for it, send me a PM for the stock, and you will end up with a fine gun

Why don't you buy a decent rimfire and make a tack driver out of it? Well within your price range and cheap to shoot.

What should someone start with to make a tack driving 22lr?

I was thinking about this idea. 2 options:

1) Find a used 10/22. Accurize it: Volquartsen hammer & extractor, heavy bull barrel. Add a stock and scope of choice.

2) Remy has a new 16" barrelled 597 out. Grab one of these. Install Volquartsen hammer & extractor. Add a stock and scope of choice.

Leaning towards the Remmy idea, because it'd be more of a challenge to locate parts (but not impossible).

What about a savage mark I? You can take a shilen 10/22 barrel and set the shoulder back to set headspace and voila! all done!

The way I understand this: you're suggesting a Savage Mk.I, get a Shilen brand 10/22 barrel , and shoulder it back for the proper headspace?

There are lots of .17hmr upgrades out there. Maybe a really cool Savage 93r or something. I see alot of them that look very similar. Maybe something different.

How about an M40? Not A1, just the original Vietnam era M40. You might be able to find a decently priced sps varmint in .308 as a base.

Been talking to a local shop that's putting on a restricted firearms showcase in the New Year, and they want me to pop by with my two ARs. We've agreed, that if I do it (dependent on when I finish my DMR), I can get a better than good price on a 10/22, which I'll turn into a tack driving semi 22 shooter.

There is? What .17s in particular are there upgrade parts for?
