I want something with nice wood, hopefully an english stock, relatively light, engraved or case coloured. If I set a $4000 budget, what should I be looking at?

Take look at the Ceasar Guerini, Ellipse EVO. If this doesn't meet your criteria you have more discriminating tastes than I. Epps deals in Ceasar Guerini, but do not expect them to have one in stock.

Ceasar Guerini guns are at the top of the list these days I have a 12ga. magnus and 20ga magnus for a little under the 4k mark they are great $ value . Fit & Finnish is perfect the bluing is the best i have seen in a long while Shootability for me is the best part they fit me perfectly. As matter a fact i was out with the 20ga today hunting sharptails handles wonderfully. they are worth a serious look.

I have owned and shot many O/U's in your price range, my latest being a FAIR in 16 wiuth an English stock and double triggers.
Owneed Faustis, AYA's , a smack of Brownings and Berretas, Cesars G's, but have kept a few- a Ugartechea , a few FAIR's, etc.
For $4,000 , you should be able to find a great gun, but unless you know your dimenssions, I would recommend either getting a fitting done, or trying a bunch and seeing which one you like best before you order or buy one.

Far too much sage advice !
Why shouldn't the OP have to buy way too many shotguns and struggle through all the criteria of
fit, technique, swing and balance, not to mention flats & flats of practice shells like the rest of us ???? ;)

I was going to mention the Merkel 303E as it is available with English stock...but not having looked at prices lately, I checked. Ummm...it looks like they are over your budget. :(
