Boys Anti Tank Gun

Cocking the PIAT generally was a 2-man op. One guy stood the Projector on its butt and the other guy jumped on the cocking-arm.

One guy can do it. Both feet on the butt, two hands on the pistol grip (fingers locked like you're helping buddy over a fence) then a great big bear hug lifting up and a giving a twist CCW to lock it. Doing it on the ground in a prone position could get a little testy.

Seems like it was a real peice of work. Not surprising really that new designs were adopted. Neat device all the same.

What a buffoon. That's not how you fire a PIAT. The shoulder pad gets pushed back in after the action is cocked. The only outside difference in appearance between an un-cocked and cocked PIAT is that the rod in the bomb tray is now retracted allowing a bomb to be placed in the tray and ready to fire. The operator puts the padded shoulder piece to his shoulder, not over top of it.

My first one was in .55, but I was shooting it faster than I was acquiring ammo. I was finding maybe 3 to 5 rounds per year, with one large purchase of 48 rounds that kept me going for a while.

I am on my second one now, but it has been converted to .50 bmg for ease of ammo acquisition and cost. I bought them as window dressing for my Bren gun carriers.

Accessories for them can be hard to find. Here is mine with some of the niice to haves.

How do you aim the beast with the mag sticking up like that?

... Disney also made an interesting propaganda video for the Boys which can be seen on YouTube....

thanks for that- quite a hoot! i've seen portrayals of Adolf in some old Warner Bros. cartoons, but never this one.

That's what I thought when i watched the video. Just watching it you would guess he would figure that out. "expert" no doubt about it

So is it legal to own .55 caliber in Canada?
I heard on the show that civilians in the US are limited to .50 hence that .50 cal barrel on the unit.
Is this a non-restricted rifle here?

Does anyone have a good pic of a Boys bolt face? Ellwood epps can convert this Boys into 50 Cal for me, but they told me to check everything else on the rifle first. I notices that the bolt face has some 'grinding". I don't know how bad the grinding is, as I have nothing to compare it to. I don't know if it can be re-buffered, repaired, or whether it is FUBAR.

Cheers

Yeah, down there, small is fine and big is scary.
Here, big is fine, but small is scary.

I watched an episode of Cajun Pawn Stars last night in which one of these guns was featured. It was converted to fire .50 because .55 is illegal unless you have the appropriate license.

It was appraised by an "expert" at roughly $6500. The shop bought from the guy for $4500 and then they took out to the range to shoot a car with a bucket of Tannerite in it.

You can own a .55 Boys in most states as a Destructive Device, with a $200 tax stamp. Definitely much more of a hassle than in Canada but it can be done.

I saw that too. The "expert" was Bruce Canfield of M1 garand fame. Before that show, I didn't know he was a cajun be he's got the accent and everything.

Gotcha! I'm always skeptical about the folks these pawn shop shows bring in to evaluate merchandise because of the way "reality" shows are scripted. Having said that, it's a cool gun. The $40K Browning BAR in they had in another episode was pretty remarkable too.
