(PICS ARE UP) Had a Grizzly staring back at me, through the irons on my 30-30 today

You did a good deed. That bear is now educated that two legged animals are dangerous and he will (hopefully) move around them in the future. You have saved countless berry pickers, geo cachers and other unarmed woods wanderers lives. And quite possibly the life of the bear.( in the after math of an attack on a berry picker)

Not to take away anything from the OP...good job on keeping your cool!!! BUT...the bear was not shot...it was scared off by noise alone so for all the .30-30 is the best!!! guys, I am sure that a .22LR would have worked just as well.

:sok2

And with a 30-30! Ultimate bear defence winner
Seriously though- Way to stay cool  and glad you are ok

I had a moose and deer hunting partner in B.C. who hunted with a Savage 340 bolt rifle in .30-30 and had killed a big one when the bear reared up on his hind legs! No way that I could convince him that he was under gunned. For myself, I had my great bubbaed P-17 in .30-06 with hand loads, 180s and a few 200 gr.

I nominate Seal Hunter for this years "He had Guts" award.:wave:

Great story, great pics, glad both you and the bear made it through the encounter OK.

Lots of grizzly around this year from the stories I'm hearing........either that, or it's a few bears that have harnessed teleportation technology.

Either way, stay sharp out there!

Not that I would ever actually hunt Grizzly with the 30-30, but it is quite capable. Many on here know that the then world record griz was taken with a 30-30 in 1965. It was however a close range head shot.
It might have scored higher except that the shot blew away the back of the skull.

The story I read says he was going to get water, and was charged at ten feet or so.

I'm sure the .22 may have had the same result. Had the bear decided to keep on coming after the .22 shot, then i would have been more wishful to have my 30-30.
use what's in your hands, sometimes that's a stick... :)
