Ideal Muzzle Break for M305

So what is the best way to get a AR muzzle break on a m305 shorty? Can the shorties be re-threaded to fit, or do i need a longer barrel cut down? Also, can anyone recommend someone to do the work for me?

Regards

There should be enough meat on the muzzle of a shorty to cut its diameter down to 1/2" and thread it. It would be a job for a lathe as you need the brake on straight.

Nope.
It would make it a restricted. Although Lazerous2000 and M14.ca are coming out with there own idea of this type of adaptor that will allow the same sort of idea to occur.

How would reducing the diameter of the barrel make it restricted? The rules are about length.

The area beneath the metric threads is .540 diameter. You could cut that down to 1/2" diameter and thread to 28 tpi.

I like the adapter you show, but where to get one in Canada?

Cause there is very little meat left on the barrel.
I have been barking up that tree for months but Dlask had to show me before I shut my mouth up on that subject.
Plus to boot. If you screw up on it the barrel is pouched cause you can't cut it off and try re-threading it again.
As for that adaptor M14.CA will be making it soon according to Larry (Lazerous2000) on m14forum.com

That answer makes no sense. I'll check out that link on the homemade adapter, so thanks for that part of your post.

My older shorty has been cut down and threaded 1/2-28. Any competent gunsmith should be able to do it.

IIRC, Casey at TacOrd did my rifle for the previous owner.

And, I'm still looking for .30 cal brake threaded 1/2-28.

They don't seem readily available. My plan is the indicate off the bore and true the exterior of the barrel to 1/2" for the thread on the lathe, install the 22 cal brake, drill the brake to approx 40 thou oversize while on the trued barrel, then check for clearance with a rod in the bore.

Out of an abundance of caution, I'm assuming the precision of the machining done at the factory for the instalation of a flash suppressor (spined area) was only done to precision necessary for a flash suppressor, and not the tighter tolerance that a muzzle brake needs. So anything that aligns with the bore based on the old flash suppressor splines, at the very least, needs verification after installing that it has reasonable concentricity and clearance.

You're right, they aren't readily available. I assume Casey bored out the Smith Vortex that's on the rifle now.

As long as the hole is bored out properly, any .223 brake should fit. That's beyond my comfort level with my Princess Auto drill press, though.

Yes that is completely true but on the shorty 18.5 inch factory barrel's you can not do this.
As for that brake call Dlask or your good buddy Jeff @ NEA both of them can easly do this 4 u.

A little bit of playing around in the garage today:

And its on. Looks pretty good. Just need to fabricate a front post sight to go on one of the threaded holes in the top of the brake.

Not happy with the headspacing though. It's .014 over the 308 1.630 go gauge. That's right at the limit of a field gauge.

edit: I see from Lazuras's sticky post above, that this is common.
