Keep in mind that Norinco doesn't make their own products. They are an overall buying and distribution company that buys enough from a variety of small makers to get away with insisting that they put "Norinco" on the guns. Which all makes perfect sense when you look at the track record of some of their guns vs others from the product lineup.

Uh...ok, what exactly was "wrong" with the FEG HiPowers?

I ask because I very nearly bought one in Germany in 1991...and an acquaintance in the USA just bought one, thinks his is a steal.

From what I remember, the one I handled had the old wide style wood panel grips, which were the same size/feel as the Canadian Inglis grips (which are a synthetic...Bakelite maybe?). It really seemed like a HiPower clone, not a "rough copy", and NOTHING like any S&W auto, definitely no "double action" involved. No, this was an actual HiPower, though not made by Browning FN.

Oh, and since I'm asking...any tips on getting a REAL Browning/FN HiPower for a really good price? All I've been seeing is around $950 and up...so tips would be appreciated!

There are 2 different types of FEG Hi-Powers. The fugly ones that people are talking about and the clones marked as being made by FN. They are exact copies but will have a B in the serial number and do not have the FN proof marks stamped on them. Supposedly they were made for supplying weapons and throwing off where they came from. IIRC Steven Camp wrote about them.

I have one that I bought from a buddy who picked it up in Germany as well. It is a perfect copy and the bluing job is excellent (was, I used it i IPSC for a bit and it has some pretty good holster wear now).

Before I get boo'd too much for owning a clone, I also own a Dutch issued FN HP and a mint IHP.

Friend of mine picked up a FM in the late nineties, pretty good shooter. FM made licenced hi powers for Argentina equipment FN supplied. I use a decent seventies MKII.
