well this winter is gonna be an expensive one! been saving the last 6 months for a new build. downfall is. IM at a total loss for caliber! the main purpose of this build will be "long range tacticool" meaning a gong smasher at any distance i can find to shoot, no compititions in this ones future. so no limets on what i can/ cant do. so the build is as follows

Surgeron action
kreiger barrel
either A5 or J.allen (deff leaning towards the JAE-700) stock
timney or jewel trigger
and toped with a SB- PMII 5-25

so, what would you guys be building? iv got the typical fast twist 223, 308, 338LM, blah blah blah. for the time being a .50 is not in the question, basically due to cost to shoot and the space available to me, if i had well over a mile id do it, but i dont so why pay that much per shot when i dont have to! as cool as it would be

right now i shoot mostly my 308, but as stated iv got 223 and 338lm in "target rifles" in gererla i have things like 30-30, 30-06 338WM . the "normal" stuff i guess

yes i do relaod, and i really dont care if i have to buy new dies and more poweder haha as far as same calibers, id like to step away and try somthing new, but if shot the "normal" most of my life and i know there is a **** tone more of long range calibers out there that i know nothing about and may not have even heard of

Why not play with a fun cartridge? I dunno...maybe a Fun 6mm ...PPC? BR?

how do they do at range? i know inside of 600 they are supurbly accurate, but from what iv seen the low 100 is the heaviest they shoot, but relitivly fast around 2900fps, how about out at 900-10-1100?? are the pushed around by the wind to much to be "useable" ?

6BR is uber accurate to a mile and is a hoot to shoot at that distance. The big fad for long distance shooting is anything 7mm because of the highest BC bullets in something for which no muzzle brake is needed. 284 Winchester is very popular for LD shooting. I still have a soft spot for the 6.5X55 SE. with Berger of Matrix high BC bullets, it will shoot accurately and is easy to make work. There is really no wrong answer to your question. Everyone has a favorite.

well you have a 308 and a 338 lap
I got a 6.5x55 and a 338 lap for play and a 300wm for moose
I am putting everything togetter to built a longrange target rifle in 300wm because I realy like that cartridge
good power and only half the recoil of the 338

a 300wm would fill the gap between yours

For fun I built a 6mmCrusader. Pushes 115-117 pills at about 3300 fps and is a laser. After building it I will always have one. It has become one of my staple long range guns. Surgeon short action, aics 2.0 stock, benchmark barrel, timney trigger. Had a nightforce on it but will have a march 5-40 fml on it in a couple weeks...
1000 yards steel is boringly easy. Hardly any recoil and I can watch the round all the way in.

Just finished building a 6mm Dasher, To fireform the brass I used some cheap 85g bullets and a pound of old Benchmark powder that was collecting dust in the storage. No load dev , just dumped 30g into the cases and shoved in a bullet then started shootin. It was -9 with a 10mph wind, frozen fingers , so it was quick aim and shoot , clean the barrel and repeat. The gun put the bullets into 1/2" holes at 100yds, needless to say I headed home with a big smile on my face. With the 50 blown out brass I made up some starter loads with varget and 105's . @ 400 yds most loads shot under 1.5" again at -9 and 10mph wind, I dialed the scope 1min into the wind but went back to zero to hit bulls.
Long story short, I should have gone custom a long time ago. All the load dev for the factory tubes was a waste of powder and bullets.
I was looking for something that has good barrel life and easy to load for. The next build is a .284 win . Should be ready in 2 weeks :D

7mm! WIth the Beger 195gn in testing stages, this is a good time to build 7mm. It'll be the most aerodynamic (highest BC) bullet on the market for F-Class shooters (less than 8mm).

If you want something that'll last, go 284 Win, if you want something that'll go far and flat, pick a 7 STW or 7 Rem Mag, and for something in between, 7WSM/RSAUM :)

FOr a stock, I'm stuck between the JAE-700 and the AICS. Would be interested in hearing about the JAE-700. My build this winter is an M1A, so the bolt gun will have to wait a year or two, but one day...

You could always try going with a 7mm allen magnum from apsrifles. Its a barrel burner but looks to be a blast. Only downside is it kinda limits you to one gunsmith and his wait time is about a year. He also has some other hi horsepower offerings as well that might intrigue you. Would make one hell of a coyote rig! Good luck.

I didn't know much about .284 Win until recently, but after reading up on it and being almost finished building one I think I'll have one for myself :) Also to echo C4pyro's comments, 6mm Crusader is a sick cartridge to play with as well.
