Ghetto-Cheap 'Precision' Savage Build Begins!

Hey all,

Finally got some down time from new-fathering (think it's more tiring for my wife than me...) and work (not by choice, my employer went out of business... long story).

My plan is to take a long action Savage 116 in .223 and turn it into a cheap, accurate, .308 rifle.

Why not keep it .223 you ask?

1 - Already set up to reload .308 for my M14/305
2 - I like a challenge, and
3 - That'd just make sense...

So pursuant to this, I have purchased a take off .308 barrel from EE, and have taken off the existing barrel:

Now how does one do this in a ghetto-cheap build such as mine? With only the finest automotive tools and home made barrel vise known to man:

(Extra ghetto points - the hinge edge was exactly the right thickness to fit in the bolt shroud slot (old-style), although judging by the marks on the shroud already, someone used an ill-fitting screwdriver prior to my perfectly sized hinge...)

*Missing pic of barrel vise, it's just a couple of pieces of 2x4 wrapped in wire set in my bench vise... worked bloody well too..

FWIW, the barrel came off with not a scratch either.. I think it only turned once in my blocks...

So now, I'm looking at my magazine box, and it certainly appears to be the same dimensions as a .308 box, but with a spacer placed at the back of the box:

Comparing the boxes here:

So... has anyone ever taken the spacer out of the back of the box... is it worth it? should I try and trade with someone for the appropriate box? I am going to try and trade out the barrel and bolt head for an appropriate bolt head... should I add a magazine to the trade arrangements?

It certainly looks like with some minor tweaking and possibly a new follower, it'd work...

Any advice/hints/tips/tricks/abuse welcome!

Matt

(also, this is a continuation of: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?786061-Cut-Crown-and-Thread-Price in which I was challenged to compare accuracy of a stock 22" and a cut down 18.5" barrel... results of which will appear in this thread when I get there...)

Update time...

Not much of an update I am afraid...

Waiting on a .308 bolt head right now, managed to get around to taking some pictures of the barrel vice I used though.

Note the grain direction of the wood, splitting was expected. Thus the blocks are wrapped in wire to hold together. This allows the blocks to conform to the shape of the barrel while still applying fairly uniform pressure to prevent rotation.

Blocks are sitting a little low in the vice here, when actually used the barrel was centered between the jaws.

Not perfect, but it worked quite well... no damage to the finish.

Also, my take-off barrel is for sale, if anyone is looking for a stainless barrel in .223: SOLD

man this is awesome, what have you paid so far?

Right now I am in for about $80 (cost of the .308 barrel)
I've taken up Juanvaldez on his kind offer of a bolt head swap, so I am looking at cost of postage for that...
The rifle was my Uncle's, he passed away so I imported it.

I will keep a running tally of all purchases here, trying to do this on the super cheap, recently laid-off new father budget... between job applications... lol

Awesome!
A rival to project:I'm really F'in cheap... Only I don't have the luxury of having the action... Had to buy that.
So far I'm about $630, including all the bondo/epoxy, gun (new), bases (new) and paint

So Juanvaldez of North Shore Barrels was kind enough to swap bolt heads with me, and even threw in a magazine and follower for 308 too! Thanks Sean!!

Unfortunately, the bolt head is a small firing pin bolt head, and I've got a large diameter firing pin...

(that's as far as the firing pin goes...)

And the bolt head does not insert fully into the bolt body...

(that's as far as the bolt head goes...)

Looks like its being held outta place by this lanced section...

Now, I really don't want to be a pain in the ass to Sean, because he's already doing me a huge favor with this. Options I'm considering:

1. Clearance the firing pin hole (drill out the back to correct size, firing pin tip diameter is the same) and notch the back of the bolt head where it inserts in the body to clear the lanced section.
2. Buy the right parts to fit (New firing pin, bolt head retaining pin) and notch the back of the bolt head to clear lanced section.
3. Buy the right bolt head...

Right now I am leaning towards option #1 because it fits with the theme of the build, and because my drill press is currently set up in my warm basement instead of my cold garage.

The second problem I ran into is the center feed mag and follower... doesn't fit on the stagger feed rifle...
But this isn't a biggie, going to just remove the block from the .223 magazine box, and narrow the .308 follower to fit (center feed magazine box is wider than the stagger feed box).

Any feedback on my options greatly appreciated!

Matt

Not surprised to see Sean's offer to help, he's a great guy to deal with. Looking forward to seeing it all come together; let me know when you're heading out to test it and I may join you at the range.

Damn...wish I had seen earlier I'd just swap bolts altogether if you want, also I think I have staggered feed boxes as well, let me know if I can help out.

cheers

No worries Sean,

Honestly, I am kinda stoked about the challenge... Where's the fun if things are too easy? Plus I love metal working - something so satisfying about shaping metal with hand tools!

I'll let you know if I run into any major troubles. Seriously though, thank you for swapping bolts with me!
