140" 8 point whitetail (a question for the trophy hunters). crappy pics now posted

I have a 135"-140" 8 point whitetail on my trail cam. I am trying to decide if it is a shooter or not. I kind of set a minimum on myself of a 150" 10 pointer. Do you think a 135-140" 8 pointer is about equal to a 150" 10 pointer?

I don’t think so. If he is on your property and the chances of someone else getting him are slim, leave him another year to be that 150” ten point. If he is on public land with a lot of pressure I would take him.

He is on private land. And I don't think he will grow any extra points next year. He is a nice clean 8 pointer. I have pics of him from last year and he looks the same just bigger. So maybe I will leave him to grow into a 150" 8 pointer. That would be an awesome trophy. But who knows. When he comes out it might be hard to resist.

You will never kill a 150" buck if you keep shooting 135-140" deer. If you want to reach your goal pass on the smaller deer and eat a few tags, it's worth the wait in the end.

tags taste like crap, but i have grown quite fond of the flavour.i have eaten many tags for both deer and bear over the years.but if you shoot small deer you will not get larger deer.

All depends what you are really after.

Do you want meat or a wall hanger??

Kinda sounds like you want a wall hanger since you didn't say anything about does, so you will have to be patient.

Most guys don't even get to see a B & C class buck let alone harvest one, so that kind puts it into perspective.

Many a hunter from the south would be envious of your situation.

Also, seeing him on cam and being there when he is is a whole different story.

I agree about the tag soup. I am getting used to it. I think I have about one more year left in me before I snap and shoot a spike.

Lol, I did something similar last year except it wasn't a spike...it was a mature buck but with a gross gnarly antler on hs one side...Last buck I killed before that was ~5 years ago....Passed many nice bucks in those years and learned alot. Even though last years buck wasn't a cranker I was very happy to take him...and it kept me fresh and cool for my late Nov. Sask. hunt, which I came home emty handed from.

Most important trophy hunting lesson I learned in that time was that if you are happy with the deer and the hunt is memorable, inches don't matter. Make the call when he is in your shooting lane. Have fun.

Nope too small but hey 145-150 is an everyday deer in my parts.

It really depends on the genetics in your area. An area that has been trophy hunted for decades may only give you a 140 class deer on the high end. But you will never know what the area's potential is unless you let them grow and shoot just the mature bucks.

And out West we don't count both sides to make our deer sound bigger. A five point out here, has five points per side.

I'm of the same opinion myself.
Must be a regional thing, eh?
