I just ordered a CASM genII sight mount from m14.ca, total was $169.-- Not the cheapest scope/optics mount around but they appear to be made a lot better than the competitors (that still has yet to be field tested).

Now the big question is --drum roll....-- what do I get for optics in the $500 range?

I'm thinking something well suited for 100 - 300 yard work, but also fine for 500 yards, so a 2-8 X 32 sounds appealing. I hear the bushnell 6500 series are excellent and they come in a 1.25-8! anyone tried a burris signature on their M14? I only want to have to buy ONE scope for this rifle for the next 20+ years so it MUST be reliable and able to handle .308 recoil. Recommendations anyone?

Bushnell has a $75 rebate deal going on now... check out p&d enterprises website

I picked up another 10x Tactical , on sale for $209 and then another $75 off makes it a very good price.

another vote for bushy ET1040 great scope for the money even at P&D's regular price, the rebate is just gravy and the scope can really take the punishment of the M14. Nothing but trouble free with mine in a gen2 CASM mount

I'm lusting on the bushnel 6500 1.25x8, probably will run it on my m14.

I just mounted one of those. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but it looks to be a great optic.

I just bought a Hi-Lux CMR for my M14, also using a CASM gen 2 mount. I don't have it yet, so I can't review it, but it has gotten rave reviews. It was between the Bushnell 1.25 - 8 and the Hi-Lux 1 (1.1) - 4. The Hi-lux CMR is illuminated and has a BDC reticle calibrated for 7.62 168 grain ammo.

The Bushnell 1.25 - 8 is discontinued according to Le Barons. Also something to consider is the eye relief on that scope is 6 inches. It's almost a Intermediate eye relief scope. You sacrifice field of view because of that. If you're really serious about getting the Bushnell contact Le Barons and see if any of their stores have any left in stock. They had a sale for $375 a week ago but were running really low on them. Plus the $75 rebate. That's almost half price.

I just ordered CASM gen II sight mount as well and i ahve been looking at the Leupold VX-R patrol 3-9x40mm with 30mm tube and red dot tactical milling retical. the only problem is that the scope is around $700 but would last for a long time.

I opted for the bushnell elite 4200 2-10x40. Very impressed! I can't wait to take my setup to the range now. After the $75 dollar rebate I'll have paid just over 500. This is definitely the most expensive paper hole puncher I've ever owned :-D

I've heard good things about Leopolds low variables I'm actually looking for a 2-7/8x myself for my m14. Light is important to me as well and the bushnell is heavy

GunNewb, you're right. the bushnell is heavy. Very heavy. But if I have a heavy rifle that's hard on scopes, then I want a heavy scope AND the rings to handle it. But then again I guess it all depends on what you use your rifle for. Is three rings overkill? Cause I think it looks cool.
