I need advice here. The only hunter in my family is in Alberta and won't be hunting for a while, so i have no one to show me the ropes. How does one get into hunting (already have supplies/CORE)

First off, join your local fish and game club. There, you will be able to meet others that share your interest and probably hook up with another hunting pal who can provide some mentoring. Old guys are good for that and will espouse their gathered knowledge and you in turn can back them up on hunts as well as help them with packing animals out etc.

The easiest way is to hunt small game or birds on public land. Very little bother, planning, or trouble. Small game like rabbits and birds like grouse are easy to care for once killed, public land is always available, and there is plenty of opportunity. Just read your provincial regulations and go do it!

There's at least one hunting forum you could join to try and meet someone. Try to find someone who is experienced and responsible.

I prefer to think that hunting gets in to you. Into your soul.
post adds, join fish and wild life club, shooting range is a quick way to meet other hunters sightning their rifles for this RUT week.
know your stuff and people would love to have you. but if you just love huning so much.. its all about hike and freedom before getting any game meat. i even head out the mountain by my self to enjoy the fresh air. also you always meet up with other hunters and chat up to make arrangements to go together in the future!

Absolutely. Indiscriminate killing is a GREAT way to become a responsible hunter.
This is some of the worst advice I have heard for a new "hunter"! Blowing stuff away is what gives "hunting" a bad name!!! Join a local hunting/shooting club & you will meet like minded people who will teach you that hunting is NOT just about killing. If you lived near me, I would be more that happy to take you out & show you what "hunting" is all about.

Take some of the CORE programs and join a Rod and Gun Club. Practice shooting targets, so you get used to the various guns you are planning on using. A good .22, 12G shotgun and a 303 rifle would be a good start. 303's have killed most of the game in the Dominion! There are people who like to hunt and some are willing to teach newcomer's.
Personally the best way to start hunting or at least how I got started was go on an extended camping trip but bring a 22 and a fishing rod. When on your camping trip take extra care to notice your surroundings, do you see tracks if yes take pictures (later learn how to identify them). Did you find a game trail if yes take pictures, what kind of game is it, Rabbit, Elk... etc. Did you find sign/ scatt, Poop... You get the picture. Tree markings (usually bear don't camp there). This will give you an idea as to what to look for when you go for specific game and well if you are lucky you will know where to go when you are ready for a medium to large game hunt. While on the camping trip you maybe lucky enough to see a grouse, (not sure what you have in ontario) but they seem to be everywhere, take a shot, learn how to clean it prep it, check the organs for abnormalities to make sure the bird is healthy (this is a good practice) and cook it over the campfire! Num Nums. pick up a few books. Brings some friends and Beer, have fun.
