Zastava Commercial M98 (M70) in 6.5x55

Haven't had one in that chambering, but I did use one in 8x57 on a boar hunt in Hungary. They are good rifles, but priced at a premium compared to other chamberings. I hope Trade-Ex will decide to bring in some in the Stainless Steel version in 7x57. I really don't know why they haven't brought the SS version in - I suspect many folks would like to have a SS M98 Mauser.

Simply because Zastava is not easy to deal with and they want large quantity orders to even consider an order.

I was looking at one as the wood was nice and they had left handed. Just never understood why some on tradex are 699 and some 450. Went with a tikka lite instead. I did some reading up and the zastava has a 1 in 9 twist vs the 1 in 8 on the tikka.

The price difference is very simple it's because they come from different suppliers and do not expect the next arrival to be priced so low.

Usually, the Zastava in metric calibers come from European distributors while the american or "standard" calibers usually transit in the USA before reaching us.

The low priced ones you see right now seems to originate from the USA (importer being USSG). My suspicion is that these are the left over of the Remington contract (bought back by USSG?). While this is good for us, consumers, it doesn't help to place the right value on these Mauser rifles.
When we consider that the average used sporting rifle made on a commercial M/98 worth between 350.00 $ to, say 600.00 $ for large production products, then, a brand new M/98 (add to this a Supreme-like action made of modern steel with a good quality adjustable trigger) at 450.00 $ is a real deal. Logically, the rifles should sell close to twice that price.

Baribal,

is right on the problems with Zastava. the last batch received is certainly or was a bargain on those days. they re more expensive but they re coming with open sights (ask a gunsmith to get those on and report the price ...) there is no brand stamped on the receiver like the ones on the US market (Ka-Var today) and the selection of different calibers is really huge and in some metrics. i was able to choose two nice lefties rifles in 270 and 9,3x62 and they re really good and no pricey on my opinion for mauser 98 commercial ones.

to the OP if you really want one dont wait or you ll pay certainly a higher price if any come again.

all the best.

I've had a SS one in 7x64 on order for over 2yrs now. It is supposedly on the way but I'll believe it when I see it.

Take the burrs off the action to smooth it up with some emery and you're good to go. I just bought one of those a few weeks ago locally (6.5x55) and took the burrs off the edge of the rails on both sides of the magazine and it slicked up quite a bit. I have one in 375 H&H as well which I have shooting 300gr TSX's at about 0.75moa. Love the guns and really it's a modern mauser 98 action. You simply cannot go wrong.

As stated before in this thread the old ones were as far as I gather a dump on the market by the distributor so they are cheap. The newer import ones are quite a bit more money but also have things like open sights on them.

I have one in 6.5 and it shoots great, I like it as much or more than a few cz lux's I've shot. The open sights are really nice on it. A good deal, you can find them it seems between $550-699 depending on the se going on at the stores.

From who? There is one in Canada already, I can't remember the fellow's handle. IIRC he got his about two years ago.

That could have been me you're thinking about? Initially I was told I'd have it a couple of months and did make a few posts in regards to it. We also discussed it via pm a bit.

There have been zero Zastava's in ss made as far as I know. Mine will be the first in Canada if it ever arrives.

Just to be clear I do not blame the place I ordered it through as the delays have nothing to do with them. Lots of confusion and miss-information from Zastava has been the problem.

I'll ask my friend, who lives in Serbia and owns a hunting lodge, to see if there are any SS versions kicking around.

There are some SS rifles made, mostly seen in Europe, in the past some were sent to Charles Daly beyond others and as far as I know Remington intended to get some too but I don't know if they did (but they announced it in October 2006).
One rare example;

You can find some here and there on the internet;

I don't want to be negative, but personally I wouldn't dream too much of getting (only) one specimen, as they seem to just make them on large orders (as far as I know, they will go ahead for nothing less than 1000 rifles...). Unless one can get ahold of a "loose" one or a "flyer", which could always happen, but.... who really knows with Zastava?...

Well after waiting about 10 months, we (the dealer and I) were informed that Zastava had no ss rifles in stock, had never made any, and were waiting for enough orders to make a run worthwhile. At that time they said they were close but had no timeline. Now over 2 years later I've been told it has been made and shipped from Serbia. Hopefully my wait won't be too much longer, but like I said, I'll believe it when I see it.

Thanks for the info Baribal. I had heard that Remington and Charles Daly had ss versions made for them but had never seen any actual guns before. So they have made them before but just not for some time it seems.

I thnk you got a weird answer; the real answer is quantity order. And Baïkal (the current importer) is not willing to commit to such an order....

Do they have adjustable triggers?

Yes. Engagment, weight, and I think safety as well.

Just an update on the one I own. I need to bed the stock(waiting on brownells order). It appears to have warped and was touching on both the barrel and receiver in a few places. Likely due to our excessively dry climate.
