Hate these threads but... Looking for a scope?

You can just about get a VX6 2-12x42 for that price. It has fantastic glass, the CDS dial (with one free custom turret included with purchase), available B&C reticle (check their website for excellent owners guide for use) and the most forgiving eyebox I have ever seen. For an extra couple of $100 you can order and wait for the VX6 3-18x44.

Traditionally, Leupold's attempts to market a higher end scope have been failures. Perhaps the VX6 will do better. At least it offers a constant eye relief, unlike the other Leupold variables currently being sold. Now if they were to market a variable scope with a 1" tube, and constant eye relief, it would probably have an even better chance of succeeding.

I like a reticle that is "there", but not one that obscures to much. the trijicon triangle on post I liked for it's simplicity, but I couldn't get past the size of it.

Have you actually looked through one? Try the B&C reticle. I didn't like it on paper, but I like it in real life.

Yes, I have never seriously considered buying a "high end" Leupold until the VX6. It is, imo, a different kettle of fish than their previous failures like the VX-7 and LPS. Perhaps there will be too many folks like you who have been turned off of more expensive Leupolds, and they won't succeed. I just suggest that folks actually take a look at them before making a decision. The advantage of the 30mm tube and the CDS turret is that you get 20 MOA per rotation - and that will take you out pretty far. It also has 70 MOA adjustment, iirc. That level of adjustability probably won't matter to the average person, but I like it. Not to mention quality of optics, which is pretty darn good. Lastly, if you want/need an illuminated reticle, the price to performance ratio is even more in favour of the VX6.

Again, I agree that previous high end Leupolds were duds. But I believe people will be pleasantly surprised if they give these scopes a try.
 
Have you checked out what Sightron has to offer? No first hand experience here but I have been reading as much as I can about them lately and they sound to be pretty solid optics. I plan on getting one in the near future. They have an SIII 3.5x10 30mm tube with a couple of options for a reticle that might be just what you are looking for.

If I was to consider a VX6 ,it would be to mount on a hunting rifle, and I don't need that much adjustment on a hunting rifle. I do however prefer a smaller, lighter scope with a 1" tube on my hunting rifles. I also have no use for the CDS system, or an illuminated reticle on a hunting scope, so to me those are negatives. Now if Leupold was to make a plain scope. with a 1" tube, and a selection of basic reticles, along with constant eye relief, I might be interested.

There would be no point making one for you, after all, you can't even tell that the eye relief changes with the magnification setting on the current VX3 scopes:p.

I would suspect Leupold is using the same internals including lenses as their 1" line, hence the added adjustment range. Most Euro scope manufacturer's 30mm scopes have lenses different/ larger than ones found in their 1" line. Therefore the need for 34mm tubes to gain adjustment range. For this reason I've found a distinct difference in low or poor light with "true" 30mm scopes compared to ones with 1" internals.

Is the lens system and coatings any different in the vx6 than in the vx3 line? From my research, it looks like everything's the same except for the 6x zoom range.

Granted I haven't delved in deep enough to know what reticles each company offers, but...

...PlainSight had a deal on some Swarovski Z3's. The 3-9x36 looks like a very nice hunting scope.
...I would also look at Minox - love my binoculars.

I don't know if there is a difference, on the mechanical side. I do know it looks much better to my eyes than the Vari-X III, VX-2 and VX-3 and slightly better than the Swarovski Z3 (all side by side comparisons).

Well then the VX6 may not be suitable for your needs.
 
does anyone have experience with minox optics?

the ZA 5 1.5-8x32 looks very impressive but god, their website sucks the big one. Not much info.
 
I don't want to start it all over... But I would suggest to look at Sightron SIII series.... I just bought one after few weeks of reading reviews and I'm really happy with it.... I have compare it with Nightforce and Leupold Mark4 and I made the right choice.... And it's half the price of the two others... Maybe it wont be as resistant if I banged it around.... But I won't so......
