Hey guys,

I recently bought myself a Chinese sks from marstar (i love it) i have taken it to the range a couple now and i was just had a question about the maintenance. After the range when i have began cleaning the rifle is it necessary to remove the firing pin and clean the channel each time i use it? i have done this the 2 times i have cleaned my rifle and was just curious if it was necessary each time.

The biggest thing I do is run a 1.7l kettle ($10ish at wally's world) of hot water through the bore and gas tube in addition to rinsing out the piston. That's a 5min job. After that, just a normal bore cleaning and oiling. I also oil the gas tube and the bore, but make sure I clean them out with dry patches before going shooting. That adds another minute or two to the entire shabang but I found it necessary as I found surface rust around the tip of the tube and the holes even though the tube got rinsed out and cleaned out previously. Every 5 or so range trips, I'd do a full strip and cleaning/lube (where needed). Never lube the pin or the channel unless its for long-term storage.
 
I just drip some Hoppes thru the bolt, let it sit for a minute or so then blast it clean with brake cleaner. Then check by shaking that the firing pin is moving freely.

I take mine out every time and give it a cleaning but you probably don't have to...just my preference.

Greetings welcome to the sks family
first of all this is a true warhorse
made to operate no matter the conditions
you could drag this through the mud all day long
and it will always go bang you could bet your life on it
in fact many did .
That being said half the fun of gun ownership is the care and handling
of them.
I usually clean everything about once a month not because you have too
because its a enjoyable time.
With the sks patches down the pipe light oil
solvent down the pin and dry and shake it
long as you have the pin rattle your good
and never oil the pin ever

Not necessary to do it every time, but I don't go more than five range trips without doing it. It's not hard to do and only adds about 10 minutes to cleaning time, so better safe than sorry occasionally.
