I've got a B&L 4000 2.5-10x40. Just wondering what people have to say about the brand. Are they worth keeping or upgrading?

I have an Elite 3000, 3x9x40. I purchased it back in 01', I was looking at a Bushnell Elite3200, and the dealer (a very well known and trusted dealer here in the Maritimes) told me that Bausch & Lomb was a better scope for a little bit more cash. He went on to tell me that B&L actually supplied Bushnell with their lenses. Whether this is/was true, I do not know, what I do know is that they are very durable and dependable scopes. I have never had any issue with mine, nor has it ever lost its zero in the last eleven years. Definitely hang onto this one!

Baush & Lomb hasn't made a scope since the 60s, so they aren't supplying lens to bushnell, who doesn't make scopes either. The industry is full of brandnames that don't do much more than source products, advertise, and distribute.

The very first 4000s were made by Light Optical, who are certainly capable of building as good a product as the "name" is willing to pay for, and won't do anything that isn't paid for. Asian Optical is considered a step down(cheaper), and it just starts plumetting from there. (real cheap)

If the scope is fulfilling it's duty, why would you want to upgrade it?
Oh wait, then you need another rifle to put it on.
Upgrade it I say then.

Okay, now that we have established that B&L did not supply Bushnells lenses, what is you opinion on the OP's question? Keep or upgrade?

I busted just about every Elite I've owned, spanning from 4000s, 3000s and the 4200 and 3200 series. Power ranges were 3-9, 2.5-10 and 6-24. I wouldn't use one to club fish, and firmly believe that sinful shooters are passed a new bushnel as soon as they arrive in Hell just to top up the eternal torment a bit.

I think I may have found someone that dislikes bushnells, more than me.

So then you wouldn't recommend using it. Just out of curiosity, what did you have this line if scopes mounted on? Perhaps a 50cal. Barrett?

Never owned a Barrett. I never had one on anything that kicked more than a .300, and not a lot of that. A fair bit of STW popped the first 4000 I owned combined with a bit of .300 and .270. The others lived briefly and died on .308, 30-06, 22/250, and a couple 6-24 x 40 4200s died on the same .22 Anschutz. One BAR in 30-06 ate B&L/bushnells like a deranged croc. It actually managed to take out 2 3000s in the same day. Took most of the day though.
Scopes of various makes show up in gun deals, and I did have a 6-24 X 50 Tactical quite some time after the household bushnel ban was imposed. I shot that on a braked .338 Edge for a few weeks, but the side parallax knob turned with every shot and it seemed wiser to fire it before it quit. The buyer said he was going to use it on a .223( full disclosure), and may have done OK. At least I never heard back.
