Hi everyone,
I was trying to practice some pretty basic reload drills at home the other day and I was using some black plastic shells. They suck. I think they're meant for over under and sxs or single shot shotguns because I'm ripping off the rims off of them. Anyways, this brings me to the question. Where can I find some quality dummy rounds that I can cycle through the gun with out having plastic carvings inside my receiver? Most hunting stores carry Azooms snap caps which are metal, and I have some .223rem versions and after cycling them for a while the finish wears off and I get metal shavings in the receiver.

What do you guys use for practice?

Cheers,
Alex

Have you considered making your own? I turned a handfull of spent shells into dummy rounds by popping out the old primers and stuffing pencil eraser ends in there, and filled em with shot before re-crimping to add weight. The brass rim hold up a lot better than the plastic snap caps. Mark them so they are easy to tell apart from live shells and save yourself a few bucks!

Thats what I did, and the best part...they were free. Good idea with the eraser, tho. I just left the spent primers in place, added a wad and lead. Great for cycling thru..

I have a mec press so its easier for me but it can be done by hand.

Use spent shells if you wish, but live will give less issues when cycling as they are factory size. Carefully take it apart. Then use the was and lead shot over. Fill the primer pocket with hot glue. Let cool, cut off excess and your good to go. If you use them alot the glue will deform so just reapply more and your good again.

That being said the brass starts to get scratched and messed up over time.

I have a box of S.T. Action Pro Inc. dummies. They have brass just like a real shell, no primer, and the rest is hollowed out plastic in a flourescent orange. I haven't had them that long at all but I haven't had any issues with them. The only con so far is that they are light since they're hollow. I thought about filling the round with something for wight but havent got areound to it yet. Best of all, they are dirt cheap. I paid $1.50 each from Police Ordinance.Much better than paying $15 for a pair of snap caps.
