Hey guys, so I was down in the states today and I had a chance to check out a semi auto AK. I was thinking about how stupid it is that its prohib because there isnt really a whole lot of difference between it and an SKS. Also, there is the cz 858 which is practically an AK and its non-restricted but it just dosnt have that beautiful timeless look.

For some reason ARs are restricted but AKs are prohib. That doesnt seem fair at all. Has anyone ever tried or would it be possible to try and get the classification re-evaluated. It would be fair as a restricted. I'd even be happy with an AK receiver with just a sporterized stock like the MAK-90 (But not those finnish ones.)

I think the classification might also have something to do with the countries that are most often associated with the ak-47 but we have to remember that its a very widely used firearm by many countries and it shouldnt be regarded as a communist death machine.

Quite a few months ago the Conservatives were rumored to be evaluating the hypocrisies in the gun laws, but nothing came to light of that talk. I suspect we won't see anything else until next election.

Also, don't bother looking for rationale or logic in the current gun laws. The semi-auto guns that were prohibited were done so because they looked scary. That's basically a documented truth.

There's a lot of ak threads lately. Basically the ar was slated for the same fate as the ak. Exempted cause of its common use in shooting sports. All guns are regarded as death machines by gun grabbers.

Actually, there is a big difference between the AK and the SKS. The AK uses a long stroke piston, SKS uses short stroke. The CZ 858 is not even close to being an AK despite being used in the same role. CZ 858 uses a short stroke piston like the SKS.

I'm sorry, I was comparing based on looks. You guys are right. Similar gas operation but different guns. My comparison to the sks was also based on finish, overall length, and barrel length. I was just looking at them side by side in the case. Im still a bit of a noob when it comes to the internal mechanisms of different firearms.

But back to my main question, does it seem that theres no hope? Or maybe?

Just sitting there wishing isn't going to get it any closer to being removed from the list.

Write your MP, write Minister of Public Safety Vic Toews, write PM Stephen Harper and ask them why a semi-auto sporting rifle is banned from ownership by the public. Make a request to them that it be removed from "the list". Join the CSSA and/or the NFA. It wouldn't hurt to mail a letter to MPs Cheryl Gallant and Rob Anders. Make sure you're polite and to the point. Your pleas may not get immediate satisfaction but doing any of the above is more productive than sitting in front of a computer. If enough of us do any of the above, maybe...just maybe we'll one day be able to buy and shoot AKs again. If you do write, send an actual letter by mail, not a fax or an e-mail. Real letters are free to mail to MPs and get better results than a simple e-mail that can be overlooked or deleted.

Would more people be interested in doing this with me? If we could get a group of people expressing the same concerns it might be better than just me. (And whoever else might have already said something about this)

Definitely interested, but I'm all about working on issues that have a chance of getting us somewhere. Has a firearm EVER been removed from the prohib list? If so, let's look at how that went down, what sort of arguments need to be made, etc.

If not, then I think it would be a better use of our energy to look at rallying around something that has a better chance of doing something useful for more shooters. Loosening restricted classification regs or transport/storage regs. Changing mag limit regs. Better access to open carry for wilderness carry... Sorts of things that might get the hunting community interested. Yes, maybe they SHOULD pay attention to and support de-listing the AK, but the FACT is that the WON'T because it seems like such a marginal issue to them. Moreover, the general public will be more accepting of changes that affect hunters, cuz it's easier to get on board with helping grampa out with his duck hunting than it is to help those weirdo black/red rifle folks do their weirdo black/red rifle stuff.

Just sayin... Work smarter, not harder...

That doesnt seem fair at all.

Fair doesn't enter into it (governments seldom worry about what is fair, or reasonable). The Libs were planning on banning all handguns and semi-auto long guns in the end, but were turfed from power before completing the job. The reason the AK is prohibited is that it existed when the named prohibited lists were drawn up (by a Lib bureaucrat, using a Guns Annual magazine for reference). Any black rifle that existed at that point in time was put onto the prohib list. The AR was included, but was changed to a named restricted after DCRA protested that it was in common use as a service rifle competition gun and there was no alternative for them to use.

Guns like the CZ858, Tavor, Swiss Arms and XCR are not on the list because they didn't exist when the list was drawn up and no one has updated the list since 1995. This fact was lamented by the anti's as C-19 was passed, they were moaning about all these evil, military semi-autos that were non-restricted and would be lost forever when registration was eliminated.

I see you are fairly new here, if you go over to the Firearms Politics forums you will see that there are hundreds (if not thousands) of CGNers and others who are regularly writing to their MP's and pushing for more firearms law reforms. Join the crowd, write to your MP, get involved in politics and support the CPC. They are far from perfect, but they are the only federal party not pushing for more restrictions and bans on guns. Supporting any other party means you are aiding those who want to take your guns away.

I am fairly new here and to be honest I'm also fairly new to firearms. Lets just say I "know" more from reading and research than I do from experience. Im also new to the idea of sending letters to my MP and the firearms politics section is kind of overwhealming to me. lol Could someone maybe fill me in with the condensed edition?

I do also feel strongly about our right to carry and other things like alpining said. Where would I look into those things?
