Anyone here shooting .17 HM2? especially with the Marlin 917? (I just ordered one for my Son for X-Mas, 10 year old!) He'll love it for gopher hunting next summer. This last year we shared my Savage BSEV .17 HMR, and also used my 10/22T.... But to have his own .17 will be awesome! I chose the HM2 mainly because the ammo is half price from the HMR (which i think is ridiculously over-priced!) I found a Marlin 917 new in box from another member here for a great price!

what is your experiences with this round for gophers? It should be very comparable to my HMR? (the round/ and or the the Marlin 917) It was important for me to get him a bolt action, and not a semi-auto, as i believe it teaches him shooting discipline better, he doesn't have the ability to "spray and pray", not that he ever does it now (10/22), but I like the bolt action. I was also considering a single shot, If i could have found him a decently priced brak open type i would have considered that! He does alot of shooting from 40 y to 140 yards..... I'm looking for a good Scope for him now, I was thinking the Mueller APV, but i dont know if they come in Mil Dot, and not just a regular reticle. All i need to complete his gift, is the scope, and a brick of HM2! He's a good boy, and deserves It (along with the PS3 ill get him as well). He practices very safe shooting, and does alot of range time on my .223 as well.... ;-)

A PS3, rifle, scope, brick of ammo~that'll be a hard act to follow! :) I posted about this rifle a short while back, also a NIB (but old build) Marlin9172; http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?819955-Changing-my-username-to-17M2GUY The action was REALLY stiff for the first 50 rounds or so, getting a little better with each outing. As for the M2's effect on gophers~can't tell you, but if the stars align...I'll find out in 2013. IF that trip looks like it might be a reality, I'll invest in a Rifle Basix trigger for this rifle, it's pretty brutal from the factory. I don't like to tinker with guns, but I'll have to overcome that with this one...especially since I'm spoiled with light Accutriggers.
 
I have one. And one more on the way. I'm very happy with the round. The report is similar to the HMR but a fair bit quieter. Very accurate and its nice to have a quieter rimire with a scope zeroed at 100 yards. I can't tell you how it works on gophers( they don't exist here:( ) but it leaves a 1" exit wound on squirrels and you can see a few feathers fly when you neck shot a chicken. Its comes with me hunting every time for small game since I got it and I am a hardcore 22LR guy. Wind affects it like the HMR but it also does the same to the 22lr. I think this might be the new caliber to buy rifles in for me.

Well, my pleasure Aaron. Consider me the little devil on your shoulder. :) You'd be surprised how many people around here (S. Ontario) don't even know what .17M2 is. I made a token ammo-buy @ Bass Pro just so they see some action with that SKU...and keep bringing it in! lol
 
Here also! I carried a round in my pocket for a while and most hadn't a clue what it was! I'll tell the local shop to bring a few in and see how the do. I wonder if a stevens trapper would be a good idea?
 
The 17mach2 is my absolute favorite cartridge for shooting ground squirrels. Out to just over 100 yards, it is just as effective as the 17HMR, with ammunition costing half as much. Every spring Prophet River brings in a huge supply of Eley ammunition, and I top up my supply. Four of my friends also shoot the 17mach2.
 
I have a 917v in mach 2 and was initially thought I got a bad one. Seemed like a shotgun pattern compared to my Savage Mk II. Then it seemed to settle down towards the end of our short gopher shoot in the spring. I took it to the range a while back to see what was going on and it seems like its "broke in". I was able to shoot golf balls at 100 yards all day. The missed shots were from me "pulling" it while tugging away at the factory trigger.
 
If you want a Mueller Mil-Dot you have to look at the APT (not APV)... but it is a 30mm scope and fairly heavy... I will post a link to Mueller's Tactical scope page below... I have a dozen Mueller scopes and like them alot, but consider the Hawke Varmint with 1/2 Mil-Dot (it has hash marks between the dots... nicest rimfire reticle that I have ever used) I have a 4-16X44mm SF on my hunting M2 and a 6-24X44mm on my target M2... very forgiving, bright, clear and accurate, the glass is good too and eye relief is forgiving.

17HM2 is very difficult to come by out here, 17HMR is everywhere, including CT. I'm sure your son will have lots of fun with the HM2 and will keep it for a long time. I still have my first shotgun, 22 years after my dad bought it for me. The cheaper ammo will allow him to practice more and become a better shot.

Although the trajectory is similar up to 125 yards, the HM2 packs a lot less punch, but granted that on gophers, a hit is a hit! (1500 fps vs 1900 fps).

Thanks for all the input guy's! I got the .17HM2 a couple weeks back, and a buddy had a decent Tasco Varmint serie's scope with the thin mil-dot reticle for me. I took it out this last week and sighted it in. At 50 yards, it's basically a one holer! I went out to 100, an dthe groups opened right up! I'm thinking the -18 weather was playing havoc on the scope, It was just out of the house (warm)..... i'll re-do it when the weather stabilizes. ;-)

this rifle is gonna make one 'ell of an awesome gopher gun for my Son! so good, i actually ordered another one!
