I finally got a hold of a Ruger 10/22 TakeDown.
I bought it intending for it to do the following roles;
Range toy/Plinking/Target shooting/Conversation piece
Project rifle
Zombie fantasy rifle/Survival rifle
Small game hunting/Close range varmint hunting
Now the list of roles this rifle CAN'T do is much shorter in my opinion;
Bear Defense, lawl
Dedicated Large game hunting
Dedicated Long range varmint hunting
So far I've gotten a few extra accessories for it and I've done a few worthwhile mods to it as well. Sorry, I lost the transfer cable for my HD camera and since my BlackBerry won't do my rifle justice, I preferred to put together a Photoshop pic of what accessories it has on it right now.
UTG Low profile tactical rail
UTG Quick Release 'low' rings
Bushnell Elite 2-7x32 with BC caps
ButlerCreek SteelLips mag
The mods I've done to it so far are;
Trigger pull is now roughly 3.5lbs
Polished trigger parts and bolt
Autobolt release
See through rail is now iron sights compatible
Quick detach rings allow for quick and easy scope mounting in only 2-3 seconds and without any tools!
After two range sessions so far and roughly 250 shots fired in total here is what I've noted;
Best 3 shot Iron Sight group so far at 25yards is 0.6'' using bulk ammo.
Best 3 shot 50 yards scoped group is 0.4'' using CCI Minimags, wow this really impressed me. On this same piece of paper also using CCI Minimags I got a 0.45'' group and a 0.6'' group. I've never managed to group so well with a 22 before.
At first I was skeptical about the marketers claims that the rifle holds zero after each takedown, so I decided to test this claim myself. I put up 3 lifesize grouse targets, 1 at 25yards, 1 at 50 yards and 1 at 75 yards for a 'real world experiment'. I then shot each one once. After that I took apart the rifle AND took off the scope with the quick release rings
. I then proceeded to put it back together and repeat this process, shooting each life size target one time. Well I concluded that the marketing hype is actually true. This rifle really does hold zero and SO DO THE SCOPE RINGS! Wow, I'm really pleased. I even managed a one hole group at 75 yards on my first attempt at this test!
Here are the pros and cons which I've noticed about the rifle so far;
PROS
The rifle really does hold zero after each takedown! Wowwwww
It disassembles into a really convenient little package even with a midsized detachable scope on the side
Takedown barrel is very convenient for cleaning and very safety oriented allowing for quick squib checks
The complete package is quite light
Many cons (trigger pull, bolt release, etc.) are easy to fix with do it yourself mods
So far accuracy is awesome
Factory carrying bag appears to be of decent quality
Simple rugged mechanical design for the most part (see exceptions for cons)
The rifle appears more reliable then the 22LR cartridge which it fires!
If the next JamesBond movie had a 22, it would be a 10/22 TD!
CONS
Factory trigger pull is terrible
Rear sights don't appear windage adjustable (if so they're not intuitif to adjust) If adjustable please PM me how to!
No sling swivels, really?
The fit and finish of the rifle leaves somethings to be desired in some places. Expect to have to use some elbow grease on this purchase. I wouldn't personally buy this rifle if I didn't already know going into it that it was to become a 'project rifle'
Factory rail won't allow you to use iron sights effectively
Front sight is not Hi-Viz enough in some situations
Factory bolt release mechanism is laughably terrible. The auto bolt release is really a must for any 10/22 owner.
Simple rugged mechanical design for the most part except for the too many and small easy to lose parts and springs in the trigger mechanism. Expect to stock up on some small spare parts.
Trigger assembly is quite complex and complicated to reassemble. Don't expect to do this very often, it can be a pain sometimes.
Factory bag is not large enough for a fixed midsized scope. Don't expect this bag to serve any other purpose then to carry the firearm and it's accessories & ammo.
The factory bag only has a single shoulder strap. A back pack configuration would of been even more convenient.
