Hi, A buddy of mine was out hunting and found a 30-30 in a snowbank. Its in pretty rough shape but works fine, he shot off the 5 rounds that were in it. He's trying to find the owner but in the mean time I thought I would try and find out how old it was. The serial number is 2347108 and its a model 94 Winchester. Can someone tell me anything about it? Or if you are missing one is it yours?

Thanks

I'm missing a 30-30 Mdl 94

Maybe it's mine?

Serial number from mine is 2347108

No it couldn't be yours. I left mine is a snowbank for safekeeping and when I came back it was gone! Same serial number and everything! Oh, if only we had a corrupt government system to tell who whose gun is whose!

Please don't go to the police.

If there are eny distinctive features about the gun, keep them private.

Put the word out to local gun shops that you found it, and if the poor fella calls you, he'll remember the distinctive features of the firearm, hopefully...

could have been reported lost or stolen already and put on CPIC by the Police. Worst case scenario would likely be the real owner getting it back. If not and it isn't reported lost or stolen and the trail goes cold as to the rightful owner and you have a proper license to own long guns it will be yours anyway after a period of time.

I guess you could use the law about finders keepers losers weepers but I could never find that section in the Criminal Code.

I'm just saying, if it's reported as a "found gun" those *******s will probably use it to tout the benefits of the registry. In a small enough town, this will make the paper, I'm sure.

I would report the make and serial number to the police and ask if it is on a reported stolen list... if it isn't you are clear... if it has been reported stolen you are also in the clear.

If you don't report it, and it has been reported stolen, you are in possession of stolen property and can be charged and convicted = bye bye PAL.

It's too late for the registry but it will be on CPIC if it was reported stolen or lost (and most likely is).

x2 Exactly.

What if not only is it possibly stolen....what if it has been used in a crime??

Maybe the area where you found it is a crime scene??

I'm no lefty but finding a loaded gun tossed by the roadside should get reported to the cops at the moment and place you find it.
Whether it's a crime gun or the legitimate owner carelessly misplaced it it's the right thing to do.
If it's a crime gun the cops can investigate.
If someone left a loaded gun lying around they're not worthy of gettin it back IMO....Give us all a bad name and clearly don't practice responsible gun handling/ownership.

If that's the case they fired off the last of the rounds that were in the gun :p

I once saw an old 94 of some shaped or form that had been leaned on a tree and forgotten back in the endless sand hills. The rusty barrel was actually embedded into the tree which had grown around it, stock had long rotted away. The oak tree had be cut and this was a free standing conversation piece in a farmers living room. Wish I had a pic to share.

Now that is neat. Constantly have to be on the lookout for old fencing embedded when cutting trees around my farm, but an old rifle??!! lol

Wish you had a pic too.

Wonder what it would go for on one of those auctions shows?? ( That I don't watch ).

There is or was an 1873 Winchester in the museum in Maple Creek Sask. that a local rancher found also embedded into a tree.
If only these old guns could talk....
