Found a Winnie 94 while hunting.

I would be surprised if a police officer reading this thread hasn't already run it.

Knock . . . Knock . . . Who's there?

There is a reasonable expectation that an honest person finding property would report it to the authorities as quickly as possible.

It is also reasonable, the longer it takes to report the find the greater the likelyhood of the finder's story becoming more suspicious.

Id venture a guess that someone left it on a tailgate or on a drybox and it fell off while driving.

I doubt you'll hear anything from anyone on here. The cops wont let you hold on to it if you call them, they will take it, hold it and then probably destroy it (im guessing).

I would keep it if I were you, and I wouldnt have posted the full serial number, but it does show good character that you posted it up as found.

Maybe edit out a few digits of that serial number.

No worries, the rightful owner has been found. It fell off the back of his quad while he was packing up after hiking for a while. It was his grandfathers gun so he was really happy to find out it had been found. News travels fast in a small town lol. My friend had no intention of keeping the gun, the plan was to spread the word and if no owner was found within a few days to turn it over to the police. Fortunately the owner was found in a few hours. Thanks for helping me date the gun and for all the advice.

I wonder why a loaded rifle was left on a quad to fall off when he drove off. It's carelessness like this that gives us all a bad name, and can have serious end results. What if children found it, what if it had one in the chamber, what if...

I wish people had more respect and care for their firearms, wether it be an heirloom, a custom, or a jack handle....

Great news that it was reunited with it's owner. :)

It's amazing how many people actually do this, with guns, packs, binoculars, cameras, GPS units, cell phones and even computers.

Guns are left leaning against the truck, stuff put on top of the vehicle etc. One buddy had a new laptop for about 3 days when he left it on the top of his truck and drove away. :)
