they're NOT rare- when you could get the norinco ak-47s, you could also get the so -called "big brother) ie the rpk for the same money- about all that amounted to was a longer barrel, 40 round mag and bipod for maybe another 50-100 bucks- the reason you don't see a lot of them around is that 1) they're an ak derivative ( as far as the c-68 is concerned( probably named, but don't quote me on that) and when you picked that up compared to the ak, the rpk was big, clumsy, and showed stupid in the hand- so the average joe left the rpk there and bought the ak and bought 40 round mags for the ak- and there was something like 10x for every rpk imported- now, they're all prohibs, so it's a moot point anyway- oh, yea, and the one i did shoulder was a 223 version, with the skeletonized buttstock
and it's a RUSSIAN design, meant to replace the rpd- the chinese( ie norinco) simply copied it
 
Yeah, big heavy and at the time, offered nothing I couldn't get in a NR Type 56. I did have a friend who owned one, he bought it on his lunch break, we worked for a delivery company and found ourselves near Lever Arms at lunchtime. Naturally, we stopped in to see Mr Lever and left with the RPK, 2x75 round drum magazines and a case of steel core. We had them in the truck for the rest of the day, never really gave it a thought since it wasn't the first time we'd gone gun shopping at lunch time. It's really sad how times have changed. Incidentally, I believe Lever brought in around a thousand - definitely not as many as the AK's he brought in (many thousands) - most of which have subsequently evaporated (there are only 4,000 registered prohib AK's in the system).
 
Ah, to be old enough to buy and enjoy guns back before all this prohibited nonsense came to be. I can only dream of the days when you could walk in to a gun store and walk out with an AK and normal cap mags. I was a young kid in those days. My best friend's dad used to have a Norc underfolder AK that I got to play with out in the bush when I was in elementary school. In the 80's our local McLeods hardware would get the occasional AR-15 but I could never talk my dad into paying the $400 price tag as he comes from a day when a good wood and steel gun was never more than $60 and thought $400 was ludicrous. Anyway, I digress..
So, this begs the question: Did any converted PKMs or RPDs ever make it in back in the good old days?
 
I had an RPK and loved it. The barrel was heavier than my AK and it came with a 75 round drum mag. I kick myself everyday for selling it long before the asinine laws came to be.
 
a lot of soviet surplus would not of been "released" until after the union was abolished in late 1991. That I don't exactly know when more restrictions were being imposed though on Canada's side. Could have been part of the issue.
