Amazing what you see. A fellow showed up on my construction site today. He's a backhoe operator and part time gun smith. He showed me a box in the back of the truck. It had a dozen single shot Deutche Werk Model 1 single shot 22s. He had just bought them at an estate sale for $40 each.
These are rifles made in the early 1900s in Germany. Very interesting design.

I bought the pick of the litter from him for $50. Took it home, stripped it, inspected it, cleaned it and test fired it. A great day.
 
Cool little guns, but kind of a dangerous little rifle.
Either its completely out of battery or it's completely unsafe.
Good for sunny afternoons shooting gophers, not so good for hunting rabbit's or walking through the trees.
 
I'm going to see him tomorrow. I'll ask if he is willing to sell any more. He seemed to have a buyer lined up already but I'll ask. I got a great deal as we may be exchanging some Enfield parts soon.
I'll post results as soon as I find out.
 
These are long rifle only IIRC. It shouldn't be a deal breaker but we had a few around as a kid and I recall popping a short into one and having it not exit the bbl.
This was one of the tighter bbl'd, less shot ones. With a higher shot count someone might try a short, a little more worn bbl might be able to let a short through. The only reason I say this is someone is bound to come along and say " BS, we always shot shorts through ours "
The one we had was marked 22 long rifle on the bottom of the bbl just ahead of the forestock. Not 22 S, L & LR.
Not a big deal as no-one really shoots anything but Long rifle anymore anyhow. But worthy of remarking on for safeties sake.
 
Thats the first gun I shot, my job as a kid was to shoot birds in my grandmothers garden with .22 bb caps, she hated them eating her strawberries and raspberries. I still have it. Great little gun.

Mine has the same raised insignia. Some have a stamped cartouche and some have no markings. Your's looks sweet. I'm going to refinish mine. It's not in bad shape but someone did a bad job of redoing the stock in the past. It looks like they used a barn broom.
 
They used to sell a reprint of the early Eaton's catalogue from the early 1900's. We had one of those reproduction catalogues way back. It had in it a rifle with a hinge top action that looked just like the Deutche Werke Model 1, and I believe the rifle sold for $2.98 in the early 1900's (1930's???).

Found the 1920 T. Eaton catalogue online in a pdf. No Deutche Werke. A Stevens single shot was $8.75.
