I've got a Tikka barrel that I'm planning to shoot moly exclusively in, for better or worse. I buy Norma's claims at the moment on the topic.

Does anyone have experience or insight in getting that first bearing layer of moly onto the bore? I was contemplating hand lapping moly powder into the bore, but I couldn't wrap my mind around how to make it stick... or much else besides making an impressive mess.

I've got some initial handloads topped with Norma 139 gr FMJ moly's for the initial run, and also have moly'd 142 SMK loads. Both are home brew and do not have any wax on them.

get some 99% isopropanol a small pill bottle and a bore mop. add iso to the pill bottle add the moly shake the moly supension. dip bore mop and push it down the barrel. repeat several times. if available heat up the barrel with a hair dryer. once u are satisfied you have coated the bore wait awhile for the alcohol to dry up and run one loose dry patch down the barrel. this will get ride of all the loose moly... after that go out and shoot.

that is how i do it.

I always wonder 'why' and is all the hassle worth it?

I understand the barrel first requires breaking in with bare bullets. Is that a myth?

Good tip Trevor, thanks.

Tom, by the end of thinking, thats where I had gotten to as well. Pull the trigger till its done.

On the topic of whether moly helps or not, lets leave that dead horse alone... it might or might not "help", either way, it makes a heck of a mess.
