I'm sure I read this on here before, but I can't seem to find it today. I'm looking for a nice shooting Mauser, but I don't know which models I should be looking at. I'm not really looking for a collector piece, just a good shooter. Who made the best mauser in your opinion. I don't have an ammo preference and I'd like to keep the budget around $500 or so (but that's flexible).

Thanks

The Swedish Model 96 and 38 6.5x55 Mausers were made to a very high standard. They can be found in very nice shape and are extremely accurate to boot. They are also well within your budget limit.

If you can find a vz 24 or a yugo m24/47 with a nice for about 400-450 and they are the best made 8mm Mausers, they shoot very well and if I remember correctly marstar is importing some 80-90s yugo 8mm surplus I've heard it's really good stuff. Swedes are good to but there's little to no surplus.

How about one of the Chilean M98's chambered in 7.62x51? Tradeex sells them for 325 I think. The Steyr made 98's are top quality and ammo would be readily available.

At the moment the Swedish Mausers are the best deal out there.
They are plentiful and affordable, this might change soon. Check Trade ex and Weimar Jack (he has really nice one in the EE).
The Swedes are one of the NICEST and MOST (if not the most) accurate Milsurps you can get your hands on.

There are others, some less common and way more money:
>Brazilian Mausers, 1908 and 1935
>Argentinean Mauser, 1891 and 1909
>Yugo Mausers are a good deal as well
>There are the Chile Mausers presently on the market, but I didn't see a nice one as of yet.

I wouldn't buy the CZ24, they are all refurbished with more than dark bores most of the time.
Another great deal you should consider, while not a Mauser but still available, is the Swiss K31.

x 3 on the Swede's.
They are awesome rifles firing a round similar to a 270 winchester
Ridiculously cheap alongside ( IMO inferior ) German or Czech mausers which are firing a round more similar to a 30-06.

BUY MY VZ 24!!!! :)

350 plus shipping. ;)

Or yeah, get a Swede. They're hands down the best Mauser variant in my opinion in terms of both quality and accuracy.

Another good choice would be an Israeli Mauser chambered in 7.62 x51 (.308). Ammo is readily available, and a lot of these things are tack drivers!

Any good sources for .308 mausers. I've looked at tradeex, just wondering if anybody else has any. I'm leaning towards one of the swedes though. I haven't heard anything bad about them.

Maybe a better question is are there any manufacturers or years to avoid?

Thanks for the help.

As far as i know they should all be very good guns the swedes had high standards so its all down to the condition and what your looking for. If you want to get a scoped one but don't want to d&t a gunI saw tradeex had some d&t barreled receivers and brand new barrels and full military stocks but that might be a little to much work and money

I have to agree on the Swedish m96 or m38. Only about 500,000 made, but so many were imported to Canada that they remain plentiful and cheap, even after probably half were sporterized. These are beautiful guns that shoot well. Demand is modest (everyone wants the much more plentiful K98), so the price remains relatively low - $300-450.

IMHO, the best possible rifle is a South American M98 is unissued condition, but VERY expensive. For affordability, it's hard to beat an M48, M96 or M38.

The YugoM48BO's are awesome!
I had one.
Solid as a rock.
Excellent finish and quality.
Mint condition 50's era milsurp.
Accurate as hell.

I deeply regret selling her :(

X2

My 8mm drops anything and everything that gets in front of it. Awesome hunting round. Awesome rifle. I think Marstar still has a few unissued and new for under five hundred bucks.

So why don't you buy another on?

My biggest issue with them was the cartridge.
I love the 8mm Mauser. It's a hell of a round.

The problem is I target shoot so I shoot a lot, I don't have time or space/cash to reload my own for the foreseeable future.

It was just sitting in my locker collecting dust and in a bad decision, I sold it to fund another project.

Still I have shot many a style of Mauser and by and far I liked the Yugo M48 over all.
If only I could find one in .308 Win!!! :D
