Im wondering if anyone has or is using a milsurp rifle to hunt deer? (sporterized enfeilds dont count unless its not sporterized)

I'm planing on using my vz 24( couldn't find bullets for my k31) to hunt deer this year and every time I tell people that im going to use a 72 year old army rifle they think I'm crazy, I tell them there's noting wrong with it, I got 3-4 inch groups at 100m so I'm sure I can hit a deer. Still after that they look at me like I'm crazy.

Am I crazy to think it would be fun to hunt with it?

GO FOR IT. Just know your limits. If you don't feel like you could make a clean vital shot at 100, get closer. Practice at 50 and 75 and see where you'd be with the irons that way. As you already mentioned, sportered enfields have accounted for many a buck, and mausers aren't exactly poo-pooed for accuracy.
If you can reliably make a good shot, the wood your rifle wears shouldn't matter. Just be sure you can hit when the time comes.

There was a time in which the bulk of the deer in Western Canada were taken with military-surplus rifles.

BTW, if you are handloading, the 7.5x55 Swiss uses the same slugs and powder as the .308; standard .3085".

Trade-Ex has loadable brass that takes our primers.

i mostly have milsurp and thats all i use a lee enfield no 4 mk 1,mosin 91/30 and a m44,russain sks, and the oldest milsurp i have a hope to use for moose is a martini henry mk 4

I appreciate your concern, I prefer to think of it as 'hot-rod'ing my rifle. As a newcomer to the sport I dont really grasp the distaste some folks have for customization, as we would our cars, our homes, etc. I guess there's purists in every hobby/sport! Me, I love to take stuff apart and make it mine!

Don't suppose I could plead for the 91/30 and suggest get an aftermarket stock? Don't suppose scout scopes are up your alley? I'm doing what I can for the poor $150 guy

All of that, these old rifles arent built for us 6'4 dudes. I need the LOP increased, Boyds Prarie Hunter stock plus pad, ill use the rear sight mount for a LER scope, and chop 5-6 inches off the barrel for ease of use in the bush.

That last part. :ang
I need to have a drink in the memory of the dear departed milsurp. Not that I wouldn't already have one, but now I have an excuse.

Someone actually told me (dunno the truth of it...) that 91/30s seem like they're meant for short folks since those wielding them often wore thick coats due to Russian winters. Makes a good story, eh?

i only mod cars that have had something done to them before (in my case as a kid fox body mustangs where my dad and his friends fav to use a drag cars) i dont go out a turn a model A into a hot rod. i restore bubba work and ive done it enough to see it has a impact on the gun numbers ross rifles are a good one here you almost cant find one thats not bubbaed

if you cant lug that extra wood around mybe its time to turn in your man card or buy a plastic stock and keep the wood for resale with the gun

There was a similar thread a few days ago. (Although it wasnt specific to hunting)
The OP was getting some flack about his purchases of milsurps.
Someone responded that he should take their opinions into consideration when they pay for his guns.

I guess I must be getting old because when I starting hunting I used to see quite a few guys using military rifles of one sort or another in the bush.Yes,a lot of them were sporterized Enfields of some description but I also saw many old military numbers that were as original.I had a Model 95 Mauser carbine in 7X57 that I used on many hunts,it was handy in the bush and I didn't mind getting the odd ding or scratch on it either as it already had it's share of "character".The important thing is to know where your rifle is shooting and to feel comfortable using it,guess that goes for any rifle come to think of it.Maybe you will be starting a trend for your group of hunters, that would be neat.

This is my first year hunting and I took my No5 (restored) out for bushwacking through the Vancouver Island thicket. Its handy, and not too short to be used for a bit of stability on the way up a steep hill or out of a ditch- rubber butt pad side down, of course :)

Once I got home and tore it down, I found that it wasnt too waterlogged from the downpour of rain, and was easy to dry off, re-oil and blacken the sights. Now its ready for the next outting.

My handloads combined with a bench rest got down to a small 3 inch group at 200 yards. I would say It's doing its job nicely for a sub $300 rifle.

Ford guy huh? I think of my mosin as an old 32 Highboy. I'm gonna chop her top, tub her rear, and run her hard! Just like you did with all those poor fox body Stangs, how could you, dont you know how few there are?

And at 6'4 - 275, i have no problem using a pair of mosins like chopsticks to eat with, shes just a tad too long for sneaking thru the bush.
