SKS sling/pouch stink

Sorry if this has been asked before but I've searched and Googled, and I'm not able to find any really good answers on this. While this might mean there's no good solution, I'm hoping that's not the case.

I picked up my first SKS recently. While I've enjoyed shooting it, it also came with the usual sling and ammo pouches. I like the look of these items, but there's a slight hiccup: they stink. Horribly. Badly enough that I don't really want to keep them nearby. Maybe I'm just sensitive to the cosmoline odor, but right now I'm keeping them in a plastic bag, separate from everything else. Does anybody have any tips on how to de-stinkify these things? I'd love to keep them on-hand while shooting as I think they look awesome, but the smell isn't worth it.

Wash them with saddle soap and leave them outside for a while, mine had a smokey oily smell to them too, whole garage and cabinet stunk!
Or, you can spray them down with the riflemans perfume, hoppes #9, or the nitro solvent from outers!
 
They are a little mustie. A little diluted water bleach solution will do the trick.Completely dry after application.
 
Glass cleaner. Soak the sling and pouches out real good, wipe the pouches dry and soak up the excess off the sling with a clean towel. Hang the sling up to air-dry.
 
Since I have three pouches, I can actually try the glass cleaner, bleach and Hoppes #9 separately and see what works best. Thanks for the help.
 
Find some Chlorine Dioxide. Possibly at a marine/boating supply store.

It's a gas that you use to fumigate the area to be treated. You'd need to seal the items to be treated in an enclosed space and use something like this:

On the Internet, you might "Google" something like "Skunk odor solution". There is a wash you can make up using hydrogen peroxide, and dish soap along with a couple of other common ingredients. This neutralizes the odor and breaks down the oils in the Skunk spray. You might have to use some saddle soap after to preserve the leather.

Never tried it on Russian ammo pouches, but it did work well on an Idiot Labrador Retriever.

X2 on this. 50/50 white vinegar and water. Once that is almost dry rub in some baking soda, lots of it. Mix half a cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of detergent. Plain liquid dishwashing detergent. Spray or pour over the baking soda. Let dry and remove all the baking soda with a stiff nylon brush.

If it can take the dog crap smell out of my carpet it can clean anything.
 
hmm, i guess i got lucky, my SKS came with everything clean. except the oil bottle and cleaning kit capsule of course, those were slobbered in cosmo
