When Can PLus P Ammo Be Shot?

If it's a .38Spl revolver built in 1990 then you're fine with +P levels. I'd skip the +P+ though. S&W started using a better grade of steel and heat treating it back in something like the 30's. From that time on their .38Spl guns were all good to go with +P.

If it's a semi auto you really should stick to ammo which is what the gun is rated for up to the max SAMMI pressure.

If you want more bump than the round that fits the gun then you should have bought a gun with a bigger chamber.

You can shoot it in a firearm that is in good working order ie what they do is just load to the max pressures. You can have isuses with semi autos because they slam the bolt or slide back harder then normal were other ammo is loaded some where in the middle. +P is max load pressure and can be fired out of a firearm not rated for it but over time it could cause damage so it's a risk. If you look at 45acp ammo load data for 1 type of powder its 3.0 Grains to 4.2 grains meaning you can load between that if you want max or min does it work in the firearm depends on the firearm though for cycleing extraction ect.

For example you can take a Webly mark I revolver which is rated for black powder 455 webly. Now they shaved the cylinder on allot of them so they could shoot 45acp but because the ball GI ammo (military surplus) is a higher pressure (proof load of the 455 webly) It's also a little bit smaller barrel so shooting jacket 45 acp is unsafe because of to high of a pressure stirke doen't mean it will blow up in 1 or 2 shoots but over time it weakens the firearm then they blow up. Some people because of this have said you should never fire 45 acp out of it because there is a risk since your at the max pressure ie +P ammo. I've fired ammo and it worked just fine I checked the firearm for cracks before shooting it as you can use a dye that can get into the cracks and find things the human eye can't. I also had the firearm x rayed as well since I know people that have the machine that can do that and there were no cracks or flaws found. so I shoot leaded bullets out of it just fine and i load my own so I load down to be extra safe about it.

+P+ is loaded over maxium specs for the ammo so only a firearm rated to shoot it should be used.

Shooting extra hot loads just puts more wear and tear on a fiream so I don't see the point unless your hunting or self defence and then you don't go through allot of that ammo to begin with because it's expensive.

I have a Smith & Wesson 4516 coming. For daily target stuff I will be using run of the mill ammo.

However for a firearm around the house, I am thinking of +P. May just stick with a Speer Gold Dot or some Winchester PDX1 type stuff.

Our local Wholsale Sports has a bunch of calibers with +P mentioned on the boxes, so got me thinking...... Maybe I should refrain from this.

The 4516 is a great gun, but honestly I could see it being a very unpleasant gun to shoot with very hot loads, besides it is a 45 acp, you don't need a huge volume of pressure to get the job done. Load it with a nasty big 230 grain hollowpoint and relax, virtually all 230 grain 45 bullets have excellent track records in pest removal.

To those who care, this is written in the FAQ's of the Sig Sauer website:

+P Ammo manufactured to SAAMI/CIP/NATO specs is fine to use as a defensive round or for occasional range use. Continual use of this round will make it necessary for more frequent service on the pistol. We do NOT recommend the use of any +P+ round. This may void your warranty.

If you plan to shoot extra hot loads at the range solo, be sure to choose low-traffic times, so that you have more privacy . Ensure all loads are released in a safe direction. Remember that hand placement is key, and don't hesitate to re-lubricate your piece. As a courtesy, don't leave a mess for the next shooter to clean up.

When shooting extra hot loads with a partner, TIMING is very important. As a minimum, make sure that she is satisfied with her scoring before you shoot. Ideally, with rigorous drills and practice, you'll both finish simultaneously. If you are practicing elaborate or exotic drills make sure she uses EYE PRO: A careless load can cause eye discomfort, or get in her hair. Be careful when cleaning up. It can get EVERYWHERE (spent brass that is).

How long did it take you to think up that nonsense?

When using +p in any modern firearm ensure that the muzzle is pointed in a safe direction, you do not aim at anything you do not intend to shoot, your finger is off the trigger until you are ready to fire and you smile widely when you feel the extra kick and imensely satisfying bang :). There are no real safety risks different than shooting regular ammo in modern firearms.
