Hey all. I have been loading for a while now but only rifle. I just purchased my first pistol, it's a m&p 9. I have never loaded for pistol before so I'm just looking for a little guidance. What am I looking for which loading for a 9mm? I hope so do some PPC shooting this summer.

What do you all recommend for powder, primer and bullet weight. I have maybe 100 brass at the moment of different makes but I plan on buying a few boxes of factory ammo so I can get started shooting and build up my brass collection. What factory ammo would you recommend for keeping the brass. I know with rifle reloading that brass choice is important but is it as important with pistol?

Currently I have a Sierra loading book and I use a lee single stage press. I plan on getting a lee progressive for the 9mm though.

Thanks

Mixed brass for handgun calibers is totally normal. I throw it all in the tumbler, then right into the press. I never sort head stamps.

Use whatever small pistol primers are the cheapest. I've never found any difference between brands. Seem to use mostly CCI lately, as it's what is available.

I use WSF for 9mm and it works great, but I know lots of guys who shoot Titegroup too. Lots of opinions there.

Berry's bullets from Joe brooks when they go on sale shipping is cheap. Paid around 80+ for 1000 pcs. Round nose copper plated nice and doesn't foul up the gun as much as cast lead. For primers use CCI small pistol, just be careful and take note of the number made a mistake of buying one that says magnum I returned it. For brass just buy a couple of EE buy 1 or 2 thousand pieces they are cheaper than buying bullets and building up your brass. For load data go read books and research. Sometimes some guns are finicky about OAL, it also depends on what you want to do with the load i.e. soft shooting, low recoil, flat shooting, power factor etc.

Thanks heyrosco. I have no idea what grain bullet to use or type. Any suggestion there?

Whoa I replied before refreshing the page and didn't see everyone's response. Thanks all, now I have something to go on.

I just loaded 124 grain Hornady XTP with 5.7 grains of Hodgdon HS-6. Little more kick than my usual 115 grain factory bulk 9mm, but runs clean as a whistle.

I might reload 115 grain though.

I reload for my M&P 9mm using 3.5 gr. of Alliant Promo (use the same charge weights as Red Dot). With cast 125 gr. RN bullets I get good accuracy & reliable extraction. Promo is really cheap ($90/8 lbs. locally) and can be used for target skeet & trap loads as well so it is quite versatile.

I use Win 231, 4.3 grains with 125 gr. LRN and the same for Berry Plated 124 gr. plated RN. My OAL for this powder and weight is 1.087 to 1.100 if memory is correct, its all written down in the shop, sorry.

I use these for my M&P 9mm and my JR Carbine 9mm.
