can someone please direct me to the proper website or somewhere where i can get a detailed procedure on how to import
an antique revolver from the states.
My dad spends 6 months down in texas every year and im sure he could find some good antiques down there.
i have looked on different government websites and on the cfo website but its not all that clear to me on exctly what paper work is required etc.
thanks
Dan.

If the Gun is for sure classified as am antique put it in a pix through USPS and ship it.do your research... If is questionable get the RCMP to send you an antique letter and put it in the package.
There is no site with this info. Simply common knowledge. To get this letter get guns info and call RCMP at their 1-800 number they will send you an email which u add the info to maybe with pictures and send it back. In 2-3 weeks time they will send you the letter. Again this is not necessary but is good if the gun is not obviously antique. Read this section to see info on the guns discussed..

yah i understand all that and im aware of the calibers etc...
but otherwise can it be mailed somehow??
if UPS finds out that it is a gun will they confiscate it?
would it be better for me to get an antique letter from the feds here and send it to my Dad so he can cross it at the border and declare it upon his return?
or maybe have it shipoped to a friend of mine near the border so i can go across and pick it up myself.
Dan.

Its always better to get a letter from the RCMP also read the laws with caliber restrictions if its iffy on date you can call the cfo with a serial number and they can date it for you sometimes.

no paperwork at all??
so if its classified antique my Dad could just stick it in a box and mail it to me??
really?

Yes, really. If it is an antique, it is a not a firearm in Canada. However, you have to follow the display and transportation regulations though.

If you want to be extra safe, the transportation regulations require an antique handgun to be in a locked opaque container. I am not a lawyer, this is not legal advice.

yah to transport in your vehicle i realise the regs.
but as far as mailing, i bought a revolver from a guy in BC registered restricted he just stuck it in a box and sent it to me in the mail i assume that was legal.

when you are having antiques mailed from the states , regardless of what paper work you have , on the declaration label that is on the package make sure the sender puts the word "ANTIQUE " on there , in front of the words they use to describe it .

think of it as a premptive strike against possible stupidity that may occur from the people who handle the package .

btw ONLY ship it by usps , and myself i'll ask to have it packaged extra carefully and have it shipped by ground . anything going by ground can take a beating , but it almost always comes through without anyone looking twice at it ( meaning in most cases i'm not even asked to pay duty / taxes when i pick it up ) .

To me there is a whole lot of bad advice on here, and no it's not common knowledge as someone said--- it's just wrong common knowledge. If you don't want your antique handgun seized at Canadian customs and a lot of hassle getting things straightened out, do it right. CFC requires you to register an antique handgun when importing from the U.S. NEW RULES--- DO IT. (it can be done on line) (You need to be talking to a CFC verifier and get their number and FRT number) They will tell you if the gun in question is a antique. Then they will issue you the antique letter, which confirms it for Customs-- send that to your Dad, He can put it in with the gun and ship it to you USPS. Yes there will have to be a proper invoice on the package showing value. There will be no hassle , you may or may not have to pay the taxes.

Register an antique?? Ok.. Please point me to the CFC regs where it states such.
Getting a letter is helpful to avoid trouble but not required and I will stand by it until you prove me wrong.

NEW RULES--- DO IT.

Just a slight correction, it's new CFC policy not rules.

It's the new policy from the antique division of the CFC as of Jan 1st 2012 (or so I've been informed). Not law or regs, pure policy for policy sake. It's become a two tier system in which PAL holders must register and de-register the antique (de-register should they find it antique of course) while the regular citizen can apply via email and get the letter issued or denied the old way. Such two tier treatment and policy must go, but of course we don't want to rock the boat so we jump through the hoops provided infront of us.

Loki is absolutley right! As always :) I apologise not rule but policy and it is absolute BS and as he says-- some :yingyang: in downtown big city who wants to walk around with two loaded antiques on his hip can just send an e-mail and get a letter. What do you do about it. The last antique I imported-- very simple , explained perfectly clear. The US seller required a letter to ship. CFC required registeration before the letter. (new Policy) It was verified as antique by a CFC verifier. When my letter came of course it proves de registration. NOW my question. Do they shred and or delete that registration from their system  I bet NOT. I wanted that particular gun bad. Otherwise I would not be posting this BS --- two tier! they are GOD. Tiriag I can,t answer that question but I would bet that if you got the wrong CB agent, you would require all that and more.

Ah that changes the story. It is a policy. I have seen that before from RCMP playing law makers not law enforcement. It is not a law then. Thanks for the correction. What happens if such firearm is found to be a restricted firearm once registered before imported from usa? I thought we are not allowed to import without a permit? We end up with registered firearm that is not in the country.. Makes no sense as usual...
