My PAL just been approved and its on the way! yay to me... shopping time..

I am a newb for sure and looking an advice from you guys. This is to be my first purchase. This rifle is for target shooting, 25-100 yards and hoping that my 8&10 boys able to handle the weight of the rifle. Looking for bolt action and cheap ammo.
I was looking at Cabela and found two intersting :
Savage model 93 FVSS - 349.99 - WMR - Stainless barrell
http://www.cabelas.ca/index.cfm?pageID=71&&section=1187&section2=1725&section3=1953&ID=5025

Savage model Mark II FXP - 249.99 - 22LR
http://www.cabelas.ca/index.cfm?pageID=71&&section=1187&section2=1725&section3=1953&ID=39821

Which one will you choose?
How much more money the 22LR ammo compare to 22WMR ammo?
Is it worthed to have that heavey barrell?

I am planning to get Flat Top mossberg for my self... :)

Thanks

If you want your kids out-shooting their old man...stick with your plan. :) You can take this suggestion or leave it...but I think if you want to get your kids hooked on shooting, give them the plastic, military-looking lighter rifle and YOU take the bolt action. It's what I would do. :) To your questions about .22lr vs. .22WMR~you can expect to pay about $12-$16 for a box of 50 .22WMR vs. about $3.75 for a box of 50 .22lr. (based on what I just paid for CCI Standard Velocity) I love .22WMR, but it's a bit pricey for punching paper...especially if you're looking for tight groups @ 100 yards. Best I've ever shot, with a Savage 93FV, is about 3/4"...and considering the groups I was getting before and after that..it felt like a bit of a fluke. Average was about 1"-1-1/4". I know this is the internet where everyone shoots 1-hole groups, but there is a dose of honesty for you. lol

IF serious target shooting / tight 100 yard groups IS your goal...you should consider .17HMR for your bolt action. Ammo cost is comparable to .22WMR, only the round is moving WAY faster, flatter and more accurate. To me, it's a more interesting long-range rimfire than the .22WMR is, especially if target shooting is your goal. If you want the rifle to double as a groundhog gun :))) the .22WMR hits WAY harder. I've had 2 HMRs as groundhog guns, and 1 .22WMR. The HMRs are gone.

Here is my stock 93FV with a big S. Ontario groundhog...takes them with authority;

Here is the rifle now....with a few upgrades

If all you're doing is target shooting and plinking I'd go with the .22LR.
I have the 93FVSS, and my two sons (9&11) have Marlin XT-22's.
First...they are each easily capable of going through a box or two each of 50 rounds in an afternoon. Right there that is the difference (assuming 4 boxes) of $60 for the .22WMR vs $20 for good .22LR ammo (and about $10 if your buying bulk ammo.
At 100yds there is not a lot of difference accuracy-wise...both will hold 1MOA if you do your part and you have a good barrel.
If you check out Snipers Hide forum there are lots of guys shooting 200yd .22LR competition...so that little bullet is capable of great things.
However...if you're hunting, pesting or varmint shooting...or you really want to try longer range shooting 200-300yd then the WMR would be the way to go.
Or...if like me...you just wanted a bigger bang.

I would pick up a mark II in either 22lr or 17mach 2. Hm2 ammo is about $8 for 50, hmr and 22wmr are closer to $15 for 50 here. I just picked up a mark II fvsr on the ee Shoots really great and has(hate to say this but) the "tactical" look to it

Both rifles have boyds stocks on them

Thanks.. didn't know that so much price different between 22LR to 22WMR. Glad that I asked the question, for sure will go to Savage Mark 2 direction.
This is just for plinking and "fun" target shooting with the boys.. I think Mark 2 served the purpose.. cheap and fun..

The next question is better to buy as one package with scope or better Mark 2 + scope? purpose is fun and cheap solution ..

For target shooting exclusively and up to 100 yards, 22LR is probably your best bet. Ammo is cheap and there's lots of options available. You'll be able to practice a lot more for a lot less money. Ammo is available everywhere at about $25 / 500.

My only caution about the 2 rifles you suggested in post #1 is that they include cheap $30 scopes. Best to budget around $150 for a decent quality scope, you will end up ahead in the long run. Also, make sure the scope gets installed properly (rings aligned with each other, scope parallel to axis of barrel, etc...). For a 17 HMR 22 WMR, you're talking $300 + for a 40mm scope, power in the 4-12 to 5-15 range and adjustable optics (scope needs to be properly matched to the ammunition / rifle).

I've been happily shooting an old CIL 125 (Anschutz) 22LR to 100 yards with about 1-1.5" groupings for 20 years, I just recently felt the need for more accuracy and bought a 17HMR.

For the kids, the most important thing to make shooting enjoyable is a rifle that fits. If you can find one, a Browning semi-auto is a great buy.

Savage makes the 22LR Rascal, with a stock perfectly sized for younger shooters. There's nothing wrong with a peep sight, I used open sights for years before going to a scope. This would be perfect up to about age 12.

It's easier for an adult to shoot a short stocked rifle than it is for kids to shoot and adult sized stock.

I've been very happy with the fit and finish of my recent Savage 93 purchase (in 17 hmr), but with scope and rings it's a $900 rifle.

Thanks Marcham. Does the store install the scope for you wih additional fee? or you can easily install by yourself? I think i can still afford it with $150 scope + $200 mark 2,

Lots of places (even Bass Pro) will mount your scope and bore sight it for you. As to where you're looking for your rifle~check with local dealers before doing a mail order thing. They often have rifles in stock and will be competitive. I recently priced a Savage rifle @ Bass Pro (I've never bought a gun there BTW) and my local independent was $25 less! One would assume the savings big operations probably get on the purchasing end would be passed-down, and reflected in the asking price. Not necessarily the case.

***meant to add...I agree with hometownhero~unless something is wrong with the scope bases or rings, mounting a scope is pretty easy.

Thanks man.. for sure will check the local store..

I also suggest looking into the .17M2! I have a .17HMR (93R17 BSEV), and I just bought my Son a Marlin 917 in .17M2 for X-Mas..... We do alot of gopher shooting in the summer, and now we won't have to share. And the .17M2 is almost the same shooter ballistically as the HMR, and half the price! All in all, its a good deal!

Thanks.. And how much is the ammo cost?

Ammo is about $8.50-$9 a box. (50 rounds) Only place that stocks it within reasonable driving range of my house is Bass Pro shops. They're price is $8.99 a box.

....sooo..what time do you need me to be there? :)

The HM2 is a good little rimfire round, but by no means is it the same ballistically as the 17 HMR.

The trajectory of the 17 HM2 is closer to that of the 22 Mag, than it is to the 17 HMR.

The 17 HMR is flatter and hits much harder than the HM2. The 17 HMR 17gr V-Max has 136 ft-lbs of energy at 100 yards, vs 88 ft-lbs for the 17 HM2.
