I really like the 28 ga for grouse and rabbits, and have owned several. My current gun is a Remington 870 Wingmaster, very pretty, but it has a longish barrel for the woods where I hunt for rabbits and grouse.

My waterfowl and turkey gun is a Remington 11-87, and I like it very much. It does not appear that they make this model in 28 ga. I do not really care that much for a 20 ga. I see from their website that Remington makes an 1100 in 28 ga, but the barrel is wayyyyyy too long for what I want.

So here's the question: who, if anybody, makes a semi-auto in 28 ga with a short barrel? I have never liked double guns, and do not really want to go that route. I do like to have the option of interchangeable chokes, and would strongly prefer not to cut a barrel to achieve the short profile I seek.

Any advice?

Doug

What do you class as a short barrel.

My vintage 28ga Rem 1100 has a 25" and I had briley tubes installed, my sporting 1100 28ga has a 27" with factory pro bore tubes but I think new ones today are rem choke and I have a franchi AL48 28ga on order with a 26" and choke tubes??
I don't know of any under 25"

One of the best 28ga semi-autos made would be the Benelli Legacy but were talking over 2grand here. The Franchi AL-48 28ga is considers by many to be the best upland semi auto because of its light weight and Remington made a field model 1100 in 28 and 410 a few years back but hard to find on the used market but one pop ups for sale once in a while. I haven't handled the Wetherby but I am sure it would be a nice gun as well.

Take a look at the Benelli Ultralights, they point lightening fast as they are just about 4.9 pounds, one of the lightest semi's ever (if not THE lightest) 26" barrel, MRSP around $1700 or so, but well worth it for a super reliable inertia action.

Hello Mac.To the best of my knowledge the 28 gauge Weatherby auto loader was listed but never produced. The shotgun was just a version of one produced in Turkey and offered by a number of companies.BSA and Charles Daly are ones that come to my mind.

Tristar is offering at present a 28 gauge auto loader manufactured in Turkey. Not sure at the present time if it is just a version of the above talked about gun or a completly didderent shotgun.

As a side note, Akkar is producing a pump 28 gauge manufactured in Turkey.

The earlier Remington Model 1100 28 gauge shotguns were available with a 25 inch barrel.I believe the 28 gauge Benelli auto loader is available with a 24 inch barrel. To the best of my knowledge these were the two shortest barrels offered on 28 gauge auto loaders. The Franchi 48AL is available with a 26 inch barrel.

Thanks for all the info, folks, and please keep it coming.

Yes I am looking for quite a short barrel, 24" would be good I think. I will measure my 870 barrel and see what it is.

If it is a 28ga wingmaster it will be 25" same as the vintage 1100's. If you are interested in one of those old 1100's there was a member here that may still have one for sale and it did have choke tubes installed. Drop me a Pm

25" is the shortest I have ever seen but I have never looked into a benelli either, the price kept me away. God as you know it took me 2 years to fork out the cash for a new ithaca 37 28ga. Could not get my head around paying over a grand for a pump but eventually did.

The weatherby sounds like it would have been a neet gun
The Weatherby SA-08 Entre Rios is a 28 gauge version of the SA-08 autoloader shotgun. The 28 gauge cartridge is popular in part because it allows the action to be scaled down, resulting in a lighter gun. Weatherby has scaled the SA-08 down to a weight of 5.25 lbs.

The gun comes with either a 26" or 28" barrel. The MSRP is $749.

Any idea who handles them in Canada?? They are like only 500 in the US
28 gauge
TriStar Viper Series G2 Silver semi-automatic shotguns are reliable, functional and hard-working. These gas-operated, wooden models feature polished a forend and pistol-grip stock with cut checkering and beautiful silver-finish receivers. This lightweight sub-gauge is built on a true frame and all the parts have been built to scale - including the stock, forearm and receiver with a chrome-lined, 2.75" chamber. The vent-rib barrels are also chrome-lined and threaded for the 4 included Beretta-style choke tubes (IC, M, F, ExSk). Available in 26" and 28" barrel lengths with matted sight plane and fiber-optic front sight. A manual, five-round E-Z Load magazine cut-off allows for quick unloading and safety, and includes a shot plug. Shim kits are standard on all TriStar semi-auto models.

Have seen the listing for the 28 gauge Weatherby and seen some sites that have them listed but have never heard of anyone getting one.It is my belief at the present time that they were listed with Weatherby and some sites that sell Weatherby fireams but that no 28 gauge marked Weatherby auto loaders were manufactured.I could be wrong on this but you would think that by now someone on some of the gun sites we visit would have posted a report on one that they had bought.

Just picked up this Franchi AL48 in 28ga ... I can't wait to get out into the field and try her out! I was looking for a CZ sxs in 28ga, but they seem pretty hard to find.

Nice gun congrats. Been also looking for a CX sxs for about 6 months now and only ran into one which was way over priced and a mess from being handled at a big retailer.
