most places will be out of stock of their most popular calibers because hunting season is well underway and most people have already bought their guns this year,
I don't know where you looked but I know several stores here buy most of their inventory in the spring, that's the best time to find what you want in stock
other than ordering what you want you'll just have to call every store you can to see if they have one
there is several .223 at ellwood epps, no thunmbhole stocks tho, but a couple really nice savages, the model 12 long range precision varminter has the target action and target accutrigger, they also have a model 11/111 .223 with walnut stock and fluted bolt, nice rifles

Build one yourself.
Step 1: buy a Stevens 200 chambered in 223 $369
Step 2: buy a Boyd's laminate thumbhole stock with new screws. Just over $100
Step 3: replace junk stock with Boyd's stock.
Step 4:laugh at the people who paid way more for, pretty much, the same rifle

My guess would be that you haven't owned a Stevens 200 or a Savage M12.
Thanks everyone for the responses. I think I will stick with the Savage rather than the Stevens. THe stainless fluted barrel as well as the accu trigger sells it. I have that trigger and thumbhole in 17hmr and really like it, now want to move distance out a bit.
Owned all of the above. Also built my own semi customs myself on said platforms. Action is nearly identical, barrel quality, internally, is also similar (exterior finish is a different story). I understand one has the accutrigger but I believe a light Timney or Rifle Basix is a better option. The only downfall is the stock Stevens barrel if you were looking for a heavy stainless.
I prefer match grade barrels but if the shooter isn't partaking in competitive, long range shooting, the barrel quality is not a huge concern.
So I guess that your guess in incorrect.
