Who has the best price on Savage Axis rifles right now?

They were $300 for the package rifle at WWS a few weeks ago and last year they were $250 right after Christmas. I realize this doesn't answer your question, but if you're not in a hurry I would wait to see after christmas if they go an sale again. Cabelas has the Stevens 200 on for $300 till Nov 26th. Again I'm sorry if this doesn't help you. IMO the Stevens for $300 is better than the Axis for $250.

OK. You called me on it and now I'm going to look like an ass. I have never shot the Stevens, but I do own an Axis. The trigger was so terrible on my Axis I replaced it with a Rifle basix. I believe the Stevens has a better trigger. The Stevens is a 10/110 savage action and there are lots of aftermarket options for it. The Axis has next to no after market options. Many people have worked the triggers on the Axis and made them better. That's not my style. I was using it for varmint hunting so a 7 lb trigger with lots of creep was not going to cut it. Now with the Rifle Basix triger ($105) it is great to shoot and shoots sub MOA with my hand loads. If you were using it for big game I guess the Axis would be OK. The only downfall to the Stevens is the internal mag, but I don't mind internal mags. In fact I sometimes prefer them as I am not a truck hunter and prefrer not to loose my clip in the bush or forget it at home. I think both guns are a great value and you can't really go wrong with either.

As I said before the Stevens is $300 at Cabelas till Nov 26. If they had a 223 in stock I would consider buying one to replace the my Axis.

I just had a Stevens 200 picked up for me in Edmonton Cabelas yesterday.Ive had a Axis in 223 and sold it.Im going to try a Stevens now.The Axis I had shot very well.BUT the dislikes I had where.
1.The stock is very long in the butt section.This was a draw back for me because I wear heavy clothing in the winter here when I hunt and shouldering the gun becomes a issue for me
2.Its a long action with a wide spacing between scope rings which made it difficult to get the scope far enough back on the gun to be comfortable to shoot.I tried it with a picatinny rail but then you have to use high rings to get the objective on the scope high enough to clear the rail to move the scope back to get the eye relief you want.
3.I like to tinker with guns and the Stevens200/Savage10-110 aftermarket is huge.
 
The best of the entry level rifles is the Marlin X series imo.
Adjustable trigger, fluted bolt, true short action(XS), nicer stock...overall just a better fit and feel.
The only thing the Marlin doesn't have is a detachable box mag, and that only matters...if it matters.
 
I have been playing with an Edge (pre Axis) for a bit and as a dirt cheap, plastic fantastic, I am thrilled with how it has evolved.

first thing that got done - trigger job. Believe it or not, these have a better chance of being tuned then a Stevens. Stevens I use a bunch of but gut them keeping very few orig parts.

Second was bedding - it helped and tightened things up. Barrel channel got opened up a ton.

final part, shorten the LOP. Knowing what I know now, I would just get the junior model in 7-08 as that is what I have created with a bunch of work.

The mags are just like the Savages BUT are quieter to insert and remove. Lighter too.

the rifle feeds and runs very very nicely, again a nice surprise. it take a bit of TLC but I now have an accurate, light compact rig that handles the way I like and really can't be destroyed in the field.

I have just acquired a Ruger American and this thing stomps on all the plastic fantastics I have handled. Can't wait to get a brake on so that I can start shooting. Trigger is great out of the box. bolt cycles like a dream and feeds as fast as any rifle I have ever run. Fit of stock suits me too (lucky). A bit of bedding, open barrel channel (way too tight from factory).

If it shoots as good as some report, I will have my new best recommendation for an entry level hunting rig or even a great hunting rig for little money.

We shall see....

Well now! They don't have a 223 in stock but all the other calibers they have are. Seeing as he did not specify what calibre he was interested in they will probably have what he's looking for. 22-250, 243, 270, 30-06, 7mm rem mag and 300 Win mag are all in stock for $299 plus tax and shipping(on line sale only)

The only calibre that shows out of stock is the.223, they rest of the listed calibres seem to be in stock. They are a bargain.

The sale I'm looking at is listed as an on line sale only. Are they on sale at the store locations also? I'm sure the one line availability will be limited also so if you want one I would act fast.

Having just sold my Savage Edge XP to upgrade to a Sako I feel compelled to enter my 2 cents. The Edge/Axis rifle serves its purpose as a great value for anyone flirting with hunting/shooting and looking to make a minimal investment but nothing more. If hunting or shooting is already a part of your lifestyle why would you waste your money on one of these? The trigger is horrible. Absolutely horrible. I've heard reports of triggers coming from the factory pulling anywhere from 4lbs to 9 lbs and I can attest to this as my factory trigger was pulling right around 9 lbs from the factory. A quick google search will reveal a way to improve upon this and it is well worth the effort but the end result is far from perfect. The Timney option is just ridiculous in my opinion...$100 trigger on a $300 rifle? Not so much.
 
This is a gift for a hunter entering the varmint world, his wife is on a tight Christmas budget....so $450 all in is tops which is understandable.

I will not buy a Stevens or a Mossberg, never.
 
I would give him a Marlin X7 in 243 Winchester; better stock, real recoil pad, very good adjustable trigger, button-rifled barrel, and comes with scope base and cable lock. It will cost just $40 more, and he will be able to use a 243 for big game as well as varmint hunting.

I bought them in every caliber they made, except 308 Winchester. Every one of them are more than accurate enough to hunt varmints.
