Anyone else find that the grips on these guns are sort of in the way. I'm talking especially of the mag release. There is absolutely no recess and I just can't reach it with my strong hand's thumb. I have a P229 which has the same dimensions of grip (I measured) and I don't have as much of an issue. The P229 factory grip is recessed a bit just behind the mag release and at a few other key spots to improve reach.

Can anyone recommend a good aftermarket, or Sig factory grip that would be thinner and allow better access to the controls?

These factory polymer/rubber (?) grips will be thinner and more ergonomic: (pictured is German 220 and 226 Enhanced Elite with E2 grips)

If you plan on selling your Rosewood Grips, how much? Wood grips are usually to beautify the gun and are usually not as ergonomic as polymer or rubber grips.

I'd love to get an E2 grip, but I suspect that's not as simple as just swapping out the grip panels and I don't even know if they have them for the P220.

If it isn't too much trouble, can sombody post a side profile (to show thickness), especially if you can show them next to a set of the rosewoods?

As for selling them, I'd have to look into what they're worth. I saw a pair for a 229 in the EE for about 85 plus shipping, don't know if that's fair market value or not. But that's a topic for the EE.

Thanks for the replies folks.

I believe there is a kit for E2, unsure if it's even an option for the 220. I know the wood grips are thicker, as there's been threads of guys complaining on how thick they are compared to the factory black ones. My trigger finger can reach about 2mm farther on my 220 vs my 226 with E2 (226 is thicker-double stack).

You need the black factory grips. Wood is thick for those who don't have huge hands. I've been thinking about getting wood grips mostly for looks (impress friends when I show them the pistol ;) ) but there are options for Hogue wood as well for the 220. Also rubber, wrap-around, aluminum, etc. Lots of options for you. Don't know all the measurements, but I've read on the forums that the wood grips are very large indeed. I'll see how large when my range buddy receives his new 220 Elite and I try it along with my German 220.

Had these on a 226 Platinum Elite that I didn't have long enough to shoot, but they felt good and looked great (I thought anyway). Aluminum grips are expensive.

Those look great on the black frame, not sure how they'd look on my stainles, but they do seem a little thinner. Did they impead mag release access at all? I'm concerned with that because I'd like to use this gun for IDPA/IPSC and reaching the mag release without shifting grip is pretty much a must. I can do it with a standard 1911, and I have a Glock on order which I can reach everything on too, but I'd prefer to use my Sig.

Nope. Didn't think they were much thinner than the stock 226 grips, but then again I have big hands so everything fits. Mag release is alright. Wood grips are known to be thick. On a SS pistol I'd go with a medium/dark colour of aluminum grips, definitely not silver.

Yeah I think I'll give them a try. Really like the pistol, it would be a shame if the grips were a show-stopper.

With the grips off I can reach everything, maybe I'll just wrap them in handlebar tape,

Black ones will work just fine for you. Lots of threads with people complaining about the huge wood grips... Don't give up on the 220, I think it is one of the best non-1911 45's on the market, but that is just my personal opinion (and I love my Sigs).

Yeah, my P220 was the first pistol I ever purchased. German made 9mm with American mag release. One of the batch that Milarm had back in the 90's that were made in 38 super originally. SIG dropped a 9mm barrel in there and a spacer in the 2 factory mags....mags have the 38 super stamp crossed out. NIB they were under $700....awesome piece I will never part with.

Won't be giving up on it any time soon. This is the first handgun I've purchased "new". Admittedly, I hadn't handled the P220 and assumed that between my experience with the 225, 226 and 229, that I know what I was getting in to.

I removed the grips just to compare the actual guts to the 229, and it looks like the 220 is actually a little slimmer overall, and not any longer from backstrap to trigger, so I'm convinced it's just a matter of finding the right set of grips. Might have to make my own. :D

While we're on the topic of the 220. I'm looking at the barrel, and it appear to be stainless steel, treated with a black finish. It would look a LOT better without that finish, since it's already scuffing pretty badly at spots where the slide contacts it anyway. That and I saw a pic of a stainless 220 with a bare stainless barrel and it looked great. Does anyone know for sure what finish they've applied, and whether or not one could strip it off without damaging the barrel? The very top of the barrel above the chamber (breach block) is already exposed stainless, or so it appears.
