New Tavor barrel and accuracy

True, but apparently the CTAR is inherently more accurate - so maybe the Canadian NR barrel is the root cause?

After all the Tavor was designed and engineered 30 years after the AR. I'm pretty sure that the technological advances in that time would facilitate those accuracy expectations. Not to mention the improvements in ammunition quality.

OP was shooting cheap bulk ammo. My Swiss Arms won't even do 2 MOA with some of the types of ammo the OP was shooting, and it is an MOA gun with good ammo. The trigger on the Tavor is likely a large part of the problem too. Comparing the trigger on a good AR to the trigger on a Tavor isn't fair at all.
 
I still have faith in my rifle's ability to put rounds into something. Just some people seem to be looking for bolt gun accuracy to make ear-shots on coyotes at 400 yards. I don't want to mislead them.

I would like to see someone (or myself!) do some rigorous testing with heavy loads. I have to get my rifle back first though. (the safe looks so lonely without it)

If my Tavor is MOY (minute-of-yote) and MOM (minute-of-man), I'm fine with that. Maybe this Spring I'll get Farmer to help me run a range shoot-out of the standard TAR vs. shorter CTAR.

Epoxy was going to try and run a test with some 62, 75 and 77-grain ammo - so look for that in the near future.
 
I recieved my 75gr Hornady Steel Match ammo mid last week, so I will be trying that out in my Tav. I am still trying to find some 60(ish) gr ammo to try. I will accept donations :D...... No one ever takes me up on that......

I have done some tests with the ammo on hand, this will likely continue all winter as I source more ammo and continue building ladder tests.

I now have Nosler BT in 50, 55 & 60gr. Swift in 75gr as well as a good supply of powders to try. Varget 8+lbs, Benchmark 8+lbs, H4895 4+lbs, 8208XBR 2.5lbs, CFE223 2lbs, as well as a host of others. I have enough Primers to ensure that my kids won't have to buy any, so all I NEED is time......

In one test (that is still incomplete) I have a load that is 1.4" (3 shot) as well as a 5 shot group that is @ 2.45"..... That is with 50gr bullets. In a 20K+ wind with no rest other than my elbows across the hood of my 1/2 ton!

Wait till I try the 55, 60 & 75s! I am willing to bet actual cash (not fake internet $$$) that the groups don't get worse.......

Don't get me wrong, the accuracy could be alot better with cheap bulk ammo, but most of my bolt guns won't shoot cheap hunting ammo either..... Needless to say, the only rifle or pistol that I own that I don't reload for in my SKS........

I have 6 days off so it should get done this week. Lately we've had 50-70 km/h wind gusts. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and I'll shoot some ammo test targets. Blaxsun sent out some heavier stuff to try out. I'll use my lighter stuff as well for a decent cross section of ammo.
 
I am interested in the heavier bullet load. I am not looking for precision rifle accuracy. I have a bolt gun for that. I am looking for consistent <2 MOA for a semi auto. I believe this is a reasonable accuracy for a semi. Maybe the NR barrel is having harmonic vibration. In that case, I just have to do reloading to find an accurate load. I have collected most of my PMC, FC, LC, and Win brass so I should be good to go for reloading.

I'm encouraged thus far by the <2MOA results @100-yards you achieved with just the 55-grain commercial stuff. Curious to see what (if any?) difference the heavier stuff might make...

Full disclosure: I sighted in and plinked to 50 yards. A friend of a friend came to the range and shot that group with the 55 federal at 100 yards. He was in the British military and was very familiar with shooting bullpups. It was just under 2moa barely. So promising results but not conclusive. I'll be bringing out a bench rest front for a more thourough review. Bags were used previously.

On a side note he seemed pretty impressed with the Tavor. Accuracy wise he said the SA80 was better but the ergos and mag changes of the Tavor seemed to win him over. I just let him have fun while I messed around with other firearms.

It was more a fun day than a real disciplined shooting day. The weather started out crappy but cleared up shortly before it started getting dark.
 
I'm always curious to hear from military trained guys on bullpup systems. A friend of mine was hanging around with an Aussie guy who knew the Aug inside and out. I should get him to give the Tavor a try.

Even when its just a fun day its still good to get reports!
